Topomaps for Fenix 5X

According to Garmin spec. : "...GPS watch with full-color TOPO U.S. mapping, routable cycling maps and other outdoor navigation features"

Does it mean that colour topo-maps will be available for USA only?

How about EU and other countries?
Is it possible to use routable OpenStreetMap for this model?

    Try this:

Thank you! I will have a look at it.
What is the best software to go over/look at the map on PC?

P.S. Sorry all for the double post
  • Ok, I found the issue. I turned off the basemap and the cyclemap from the map settings on the 5X. The standard base map continues to show until you force a redraw using zoom in/ zoom out or a pan/ zoom. Then, the whole map redraws leaving the Topo maps complete with contours. Very nice

Maybe this depends on the specific region. If I leave only the TopoActive Europe v3 West selected, I do not see any contours. If I open this up with Basecamp I do not see them either. I can only get contours by explicitly loading a contour map overlay onto my watch which was relatively easy. There is a v4 map update waiting for me so I will try this later, but it is telling me it's a 2 hours update and I am going out on my bike soon. Here is what I see in Basecamp with the v3 map:

Only the US watches comes with contour maps. Check out the post above on how to load detailed contour maps. The UK and Europe maps don't have contours even after the big update yesterday

Check out this link for instructions how to get them working

  • The topo active Europe west and east comes with elevation data in the map datas but not with visible contour lines;)

As I already mentioned, I have already loaded a contour overlay. There is no need to load an entire new map, it is possible to get an overlay which is purely the contour lines. I am happy with the detail of the existing garmin topo map, but just wanted the contour lines.
  • Although one disadvantage is that the contours appear on top of everything else.

I Can confirm this worked for Sydney. Australia

    Thanks for your post

I can second this, thanks for the tip!

Also someone was asking about being able to plot their own courses very quickly. I discovered two ways of doing this:

    1. routeCourse - free app, which allows you to transfer up a plotted course from your phone. Works brilliantly and very quickly. $10 yearly subscription is worth it for being able to save courses in an archive and get turn by turn navigation.

    2. Wikiloc - free app on garmin but requires $10 a year subscription to use with the garmin (1 free test). You get access to a plethora of walks which are searchable from your phone. You then 1 cilck send it to your garmin. Also excellent

I've used both and they work awesome, even better with the topo maps showing the contour lines, cause who doesnt like contour lines right :)

    A quick noob question:
If I understand this thread correctly then it is possible to buy a F5X in the US (preloaded with US Topo), return back home to Europe and load Topo maps for my area free of charge (OSM) but with the same features (contour lines and auto-routing) as if I bought the EU version?
