The new fenix 5X

Just thought I'd get in first...

Sorry.
  • The manual talks about switching between mass storage and garmin modes on the USB, so that is probably a yes.
  • Thanks! It indeed looks as if that functionality won't have changed. And I had not expected there would already be a manual online for a product that nobody (ordinary consumers) owns yet. :)
  • Watchface additional data

Just back from a run with the Epix, and realized that the one tiny little thing I miss on the F3 is a digital watchface with seconds, baro trend arrow, sunrise(sunset), day, and date. Would be awesome of the F5 would have this, but I have only seen one image of the stock digital watchface with no additional data on it.
  • Yeah and I miss working interival timer in Epix... I hope Fenix5 will had it working.
  • size/weight/wearability

The 5X is 1.5mm thicker than the F3HR, or 0.5mm thicker than the Fenix 2. So that's pretty t5hick. When I owned the Fenix 2, wearing it day-to-day was annoying (to me)..

I have the same experience with the Fenix (2), it caught on clothing and felt "top-heavy". Oddly, the thicker (18 mm) Suunto Ambit, with GPS "bump" and all, was never a problem, because the weight was distributed more evenly, and the design of the buttons was slightly different such that they didn't catch on fabric so easily. And the Epix (50.8x53.3x17.8mm) is very comfortable to wear, despite being quite bulky. I guess I'll just have to wait and see/feel for myself if the 5X is comfortable enough for daily wear including sleeptracking.. I have thin wrists. But I just *have* to have maps, all functionality in one watch (currently using both F3 and Epix). I'm also so looking forward to how the including of a gyroscope will work to improve tracks and navigation.

Edit: Found the price on the Dutch Garmin site: 900 euros (and that is not a bundle). I am not so sure that I actually really need this 5X. I can also buy a nice bike for that amount of money. Or 9 pairs of running shoes. Or an elliptical trainer. A stand-up paddle board.

Another edit: that was the version with the metal band. The regular version is "only" 750 euros.
  • Your paying a good bit of money for the maps themselves as in a world of free maps Garmin is still quite costly lands & sea
  • Between those who returned F3's due to gps issues and those that returned them due to alti-baro issues, I bet there's a number of us (I returned multiple F3's) that would love to go back to the Fenix line, but not until Garmin can improve accuracy. I intend to pre-order with REI asap and compare against my current watch (Ambit 3 Peak).

    Expectations low, hopes high :-)

Ambit 3 seems to be a solid device. However the F3 is not that bad. It constantly outperformed Suuntos Spartan Ultra in accuracy when I used them both side by side. Will be fun to see if and by how much Garmin can improve from F3 to F5. I am one of those who can sacrfice bit of accuracy for a good looking watch. But Suunto was asking simply way too much with the Spartan line. Really hoping that F5 is on par or better than F3.

It seems to me that most of what you're paying for is the (much) larger storage.
  • Your most likely getting 100k Topo USA plus streets with the 100k alone 99.00 plus streets

The much better 24k are only done in regions and would be over 400 dollars
