The new fenix 5X

Just thought I'd get in first...

Sorry.
  • As long as I can overload my own map files I don't care. There are plenty of quality topo map sources out there, many of which are freely available
  • According to the DCRainmaker hands on it supports open maps so you should be good.
  • It seems to me that most of what you're paying for is the (much) larger storage.

Also for the much larger memory. Epix has an external RAM chip to acommodate maps. Apparently F5X model has an external chip too. This gives a lot of RAM for CIQ developers to fill. I got the table from 2.2.3 SDK, CIQ memory support between Fenix 5 models. For me F5X is the only model to go.
  • It does not mean anything. Epix has 8gb ram and you cant have more than three CIQ fields because more will do restart of watch when you add ciq field to screen.

I suggest wait half or better - full year before buy of new Fenix5 to see if Garmin will fix all bugs.

All those bugs and "restart" bug would probably be fixed if Garmin actually updated the Epix since its launch.
  • Hope they will add ant+fe-c/ant+fe compatibility

Don't count on that, Garmin creates more problems than they ever fix! Fenix 3 and Epix owners are well aware of this fact.
Garmin's solution to problems is adding in new features, so that the known problems are forgotten by new ones.
It is very unfortunate that they use the general public for their test market.

I wonder why this always comes up although it simply is not true. I've had F3 and F3HR 1,5 years now. Bugs have been fixed as well as new functionality added (some of which I could not care less, but are important to others) Having used Polar and Suunto products too, Garmin has delivered more and better (not flawless) than either of the two. Polar not being far behind though.

There are issues on some units, always is the case and some people are experiencing issues, yes. But there are plenty of people who do not have problems with the products. And I would say that epix owners got the shorter straw based on the discussion here, so what you say may be true for them. But simply outright false statement for F3/HR.

Just to pick up an example, there was an issue with footpod autocalibration on both F3 and F3HR, both were fixed. Although it took much longer to get the fix for F3HR ;-)

I'm still waiting for them to fix the accuracy and altimeter. The accuracy of the F3 is a joke, especially if you compare the cost of it. A feature that is crucial to the function of tracking activities.
Why is the original Fenix always more accurate on both accounts.
Progression of new technology, should always mean moving forwards, not backwards.

Agree... My fenix 3 has been pretty rock solid. Some just like to complain I suppose.....
