The new fenix 5X

Just thought I'd get in first...

Sorry.

slet's not jump to conclusion based on speculations!

The new fenix will use a gyroscope to improve accuracy (by detecting small changes of directions (left/right), when GPS reception is poor (cities & canyons/trees)). I'm really looking forward to see how well that works!
  • I just posted that out of sheer mischief and badness, I've never had an issue with the GPS on the Fenix 3.

More a comment on forum dwellers and a dig at some of the beta comments from the F3 forum.

I've got itchy gadget fingers already about the 5X :)

Like many (I'm sure), I'm strugging to figure out which size to get. Currently use Fenix3HR as an everyday watch and a running watch.

Do I get with the 5X, get maps and same size as Fenix 3.

Or go with the 5 for the battery life? (Ultra runner and most of the courses I use don't have street 'maps' cause they're in the middle of the woods)

Serious question, can someone explain the practical use for maps as a runner? Most of my routes are the same routes and predetermined.
  • I think the 5x is actually slightly (1.5mm) thicker than the Fenix 3. Actually I'm not sure if that's comparing it to the f3 or f3hr which might itself be thicker than the f3.

Must admit I'm tempted with the new f5. I use the f3, and probably think the f5x might just be too big.
  • I'm curious as to whether Garmin has changed up the hardware on the altimeter-barometer sensors.
Mine (under warranty) continue to provide erroneous readings. Any one have inside intel?

I'm assuming there are off-road maps that could also be handy (the ability to upload GPX to follow is useful too), but for me it would be more of a seldom-used niche filled when I travel than for anything else. Nice to have if I can, but....

The 5X is 1.5mm thicker than the F3HR, or 0.5mm thicker than the Fenix 2. So that's pretty thick. When I owned the Fenix 2, wearing it day-to-day was annoying (to me), and running with it was also annoying until I warmed-up and really got going. Then it didn't really bother me. So, reserving the right to change my mind, I'm going with a F5 Sapphire pre-order for now and giving up the Maps option in order to ensure day-to-day wearability.
  • That nice Mr Rainmaker has already said that you can load whatever maps you like onto the 5X. He's already produced a guide for doing this with the Edge cycle computers, I imagine that the process will be very similar with the 5X.

I have to say I'm seriously tempted. I got the Fenix 3 just before the 3HR was released and got serious jealous eyes for that one. This with the mapping might just tip me over the edge. The "make me an x mile loop" feature alone is a big plus. I've lost count of the amount of times I've arrived somewhere new, spent time making an interesting loop on Connect and then realising that I don't have time to run it because of how long I've spent planning it.

This would definitely be a feature I'd use.
  • The first thread on the subforum and it's nothing but a troll thread.
Really hope this is not the shape of things to come, that this thread is deleted and replaced with something that is at least marginally usefull.
  • Fair enough it started as a troll thread, but it has developed somewhat I think.

I would draw the line at deletion, but I'd be happy for the title to be changed - I don't think I can do it myself as a normal user.

Edit: As I thought, I can't edit the title of the thread. Suggested new title for a Moderator to edit - Looking forward to getting the new 5X
  • Yeah, changing the title to something more constructive would definetly do the trick!
