Why are my maps laggy on my garmin fenix 5x plus?

So pretty much about 4 days ago i bought the garmin fenix 5x plus after being reccomended the 5x plus over the fenix 6/6s, as i didnt wanna spend like 650+ on the pro or x series. I bought the 5x plus at 400 euros which was a great deal. However, i bought it for varioud sports and when i load the maps, it begins to lag. If i turn the watch to the right, it turns right after 2 second whilst lagging. Does anybody have some tips or advice? btw i didnt install and sort of mapping system here, im simply using the default garmin maps.

  • When does this happen? During an activity and watching a map screen? If so, my understanding is that Garmin uses the GPS heading when you are moving, and this unavoidably causes a lag (you have to move a couple of seconds before the watch knows in which direction you are moving). If you are stationary, it uses the electronic compass with somewhat less lag (but even there the readings are noisy, so there's some lag caused by averaging). The reason for this difference between moving/stationary is that using the compass makes the heading dependent on how you orient the watch (but using GPS heading while moving means it shows in which direction you are moving, regardless of watch orientation).

Someone correct me, if I've interpreted/guessed things wrong. Slight smile

  • I think that's right.

I have set maps to 'north up', so the map is a steady view, which I find easier, but it may take some time to get used to as most navigation systems use 'track up' by default.

  • Yes, the north-up view makes the maps much easier to manage, then the map doesn't constantly rotate. It's also much battery-friendlier, as the watch doesn't have to constantly redraw the whole screen.
