During my swims no gps is recorded at all?
If your watch is permanently submerged, GPS signal cannot be acquired. If you’re swimming freestyle, the time the watch is out of the water might be enough.
My old tomtom and a 945`er do the job. What is wrong?
As stated by JanH, you cannot get a gps signal when watch is below surface eg. in water.
This is just how it is. If you choose the activity type outdoor swimming you might have your arm above water just long enough for the watch to get your GPS position.
So it is just a watch with poor gps?
My F5+ is usually acquiring GPS quite fast. So I wouldn’t say it has poor GPS.
The fact that you didn’t have issues with ur 945 might be related to many things, one of them being maybe higher sensitivity due to different sensor or housing. But that’s just wild guessing.
Not actually - they both use the GPS Chipset Type M5 - in most cases it is a matter of how good the reception of the signal is when you start out swimming.
You could start of with letting the watch soak for a few mins before jumping in to the water.
And it could also be a firmware issue, what FW are you on?
Fw 15.40 (d1d8d53)
I know this reference is from a couple of years ago and I do accept that software updates can change things but the 5 Plus certainly was working in the open water. - https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-5-plus-series/210307/open-water-swimming
My wife still uses her 945 and she has no problem recording reasonable tracks and accuracy when in the sea. Unfortunately it's winter here, we're soft and not swimming outdoors for a couple more months so have no current tracks with the latest firmware to offer.
If you haven't already done so read the Garmin Support advice for open water swimming - https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=AnrKqtOX8FAzmF9yXaIXe6
