Fenix 5 Plus 'reset' metric calculations (Performance Condition, Training Effect) during my first marathon. No VO2max or Training Load calculated. Any ways to fix this?

I did my first marathon earlier and recorded the run on my Fenix 5 Plus.

Around the 5 hr mark, I was flipping through the data screens and got the blue triangle logo. I thought the watch had run out of power and was shutting down, but then it went back to the data screen with the activity paused. I resumed the activity and finished the run after another 30 min.

Right when it happened, I saw some of the metrics were 'reset'. My Performance Condition was -3 before, and it went to no value (Image 1). The Training Effects were at least 3 and 3 at some point, but got reset and were 2.8 and 1.4 at the finish.

My training load and status were the same as before the run (256 - Peaking) (Image 2).

The weirdest thing is that it also calculated an 'Exercise Load' for this activity. This feature is not even available on Fenix 5 Plus!!!

It doesn't show the value on the watch. Only on the Connect app and website (Image 2 and 3).

I had tried out the 945 for a few days months ago and it calculated the Exercise Load when I used it but never again after that.

Any ideas on what's happening? Is it still possible to salvage the activity and metrics?

  • About that weirdest thing..  this is ONLY a theory, based on looking at behavior and files from a Fenix 5 Plus and a Forerunner 945:

I suspect that Exercise Load is calculated by the Fenix 5 Plus similarly as in the FR945, but is not reported separately. If you make a note of the 7-day training load before an activity and subtract that from the training load after the activity, you get a number that's very close or at least related to what a FR945 presents as the Exercise Load. So this number is probably present, at least temporarily, to allow the 7-day load calculation.

Probably because of the reboot, the calculation wasn't done, failed or invalid, so 7-training load wasn't updated. However the 'value-to-add' may have been saved as Exercise Load for later, as part of the 'handle crash routine', and that got synced to Connect.

There is no way to know for sure - I'm just guessing, because I enjoy exploring how things may work. I was curious if I could reconstruct Exercise Load from 7-day training load on Fenix 5 Plus, and was validating that by comparing with FR945 data, so I dug into it for a bit. Some of the information in those files is documented, but a lot is unknown.
