Fenix 5x Plus - no GPS signal

My watch suddenly stopped getting a GPS signal, the connection bar stays red when I start a new activity. Waiting for a signal and never get a lock. I even left it in an open field for an hour to try to get a position fix, nothing.

Firmware: 15.3 (updated to beta, didn't fix)

GPS 2.70

Wi-Fi 2.50

CIQ 3.2.5

BMX 0.4.3

WHR 20.03.32

ANT/BLE/BT: 6.11

Sensor Hub: 2.4

EPO: Current

I tried following all the Garmin support steps, tried soft and hard reboots, did a factory reset, nothing seems to bring a GPS lock back.

Garmin of course wants money to fix it. A 3 year old premium watch with no damage shouldn't have issues like this.

Any ideas?

  • How long did you expect a 1 year warranty to last?

  • No ideas directly, but is everything else working as it should (Bluetooth, ANT+, baro/altimeter)? Do you remember anything happen right before it stopped getting GPS?

Is there any progress with the red bar or does it not advance at all?

Despite the EPO being current, you could try connecting the watch to a computer and deleting the EPO.BIN file. If somehow this file is corrupt, getting a GPS lock can take hours.

You did a reset to factory defaults probably, so all activity apps should be back to defaults, but otherwise it might be an idea to rule out a corrupted activity profile by trying a 'save location' or time sync with GPS.

There is a test mode to check the components.

    - Switch off the device.
    - Press the down button and hold it
    - Press the light button to switch on the device, let it go when the garmin triangle appears let the light button go.

Then press Back/Lap a number of times until you get to the GPS Test screen. Go outdoor and see if it will show numbers or only --:--

To exit test mode, press Light to switch the device off. Then back on again.

You could also check the errorlogs on the watch for unusual things. It's all undocumented but some things are logged (sorftof) clearly.

  • Everything else works exactly as it should. I did a run in Nashville, flew back to Minneapolis, and noticed the elevation was really messed up, like negative 7,000 feet, so I did a manual elevation entry when I got home.

I tried to do a run the next day, no lock since. The map still showed Nashville as the last known location.

After a reset the default location updated to my home location, but still no GPS lock.

I tried deleting the EPO and re-syncing, also no luck.

    Test mode shows --:--

So strange that the GPS would fail, but everything else works just fine...

  • There's a difference between warranty and statutory rights (called differently in different countries). Even if the device is out of warranty, in many countries there are additional consumer rights concerning poor workmanship discovered during the expected lifespan of the product. But the problem of course is what the "expected lifespan" of a GPS watch is. Also, after warranty period it's typically the buyer's responsibility to prove that the fault wasn't because of improper use or normal wear and tear.

Indeed. If the watch wasn't dropped or hit, there is no reason to suspect a GPS antenna connection problem.

So this first occurred after a flight, coincidence probably, but it does make me wonder if not something in the software got messed up. But reset to factory defaults should have fixed that. I'm out of ideas, except, trying to go back to v 14.00 and sending me a PM with the latest file in EVNTLOGS (before going back to 14.00).
