Can I add hiking trail maps to my new Fenix 5s Plus? Do I need to pay for the maps on Garmin Basecamp?

I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, but I recently purchased the Garmin Fenix 5s Plus and I'm struggling to figure out how to properly use it.  I've had several lower level Garmin watches in the past, but nothing with as many features as the Fenix.  I would love to use this watch for hiking, but I'm very confused as to how to upload trails onto it.  I would love to upload popular area hikes to the watch.  Do I have to buy the $60 maps on the Garmin Basecamp website?  When I tried using Garmin Connect and going to courses, it doesn't show trails.. only roads.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may have for me.  Slight smile

  • You can buy maps on our main www.garmin.com webpage and use Garmin Express to download and install them to your watch. You can also choose to research and find your own compatible maps and manually copy them to your watch.

  • Connect, at least in the US, gives you the choice of 3 maps - Google Maps, HERE Maps, and OpenStreetMaps.

Each of the map sets has a different level of details, especially for things like trails.  If you're not seeing trails on one (probably Google Maps), try another. Which will be best will vary a lot on the region/country you're in, but can also vary on a trail-by-trail basis.
