Fenix 5 plus internal temperature sensor not working, Possible 15.20 issue? - 15.40 seems to have fixed

I have recently noticed that the internal temperature sensor is no longer working on Fenix 5 plus.

As I use a Tempe most of the time I had not noticed this issue more readily. However there are times when I don't have the Tempe with me and I used to get the (not particularly great) reading from the internal sensor.

However over the past month or two on the occasions when the Tempe is not present the Temperature data field shows "--.-".

This seems to correlate roughly with the time I installed 15.20.

I have tried rebooting the watch and disabling the Tempe but nothing seems to get the internal temperature reading to work.

  • I have used both Tempe and the internal sensor under both 15.20 and 15.30 beta without problems. So it might be something with your watch. Is the altimeter still working normally? (The internal temperature sensor is used to tune the altimeter so that it's not sensitive to temperature changes. If the altimeter doesn't work correctly (shows altimeter/air pressure changes when only temperature changes), it might be that your temperature sensor is broken.

  • Using an altimeter field it seems to be getting readings (value keeps changing). I have also tried soaking watch in warm soapy water but no joy

In diagnostic mode it says my barometer reading is invalid

  • Hmm... looking at my historical floors data it seems things started going awry back in January. So I suspect sensor is broken.

If it's taken me 5 months to notice and the watch I well out of warranty it's probably not worth getting repaired.....But it does strengthen my argument for getting a Fenix 7 when it finally appearsJoy

  • Just a curiosity: 4-5 days after the release of 15.40 my watch still cant see it as a new version to be installed.

I wonder whether the installment of 15.20, which was withdrawn almost immediately after its appearance, may have the factor behind.

I never faced a situation with any of my Garmin devices when 2-3 days were not enough to get a new version.

    Just a thought…..

  • I'd say they still haven't rolled it out completely - probably no work done over the weekend.  I still haven't received the update but I am on 15.40 beta which seems to work fine.
