Waypoints and navigation

I've been searching the forums on this but haven't found recent answers for what should be a relatively simple problem.  What I'd like to do is set up a course for a hike in Garmin Connect, then decorate the course with waypoints in GC, send it to my watch and then have the watch update me on the next waypoint on the course while I am hiking.  In short, I'd like to break the hike into smaller segments with specific features (trail junctions, sun-dappled waterfalls, picturesque mountain peaks) identified both on the map and in data fields (such as Distance to wpt).

Surprisingly, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this.  I can mark specific locations in Garmin Connect but these are "Course Points" which do not appear to be navigable on the watch..  I can mark waypoints from the watch itself if I actually hike to a location and mark it, but this is not practical for hikes that I want to plan out beforehand on the computer.

Finally, I do like the ClimbPro feature on the watch.  On a hike I did yesterday, it correctly identified the various climbs in the hike.  But it would be nice to see these self-same climb on the Map itself.  There is a disconnect there which I cannot bridge.

Any experienced hikers with insights (or links to insights) into these problems would be welcome. Thanks in advance.

  • I don't use it myself, so am not sure it can do what you want, but have you had a look at the Garmin Basecamp software?

  • Thanks for your reply Twinaxx.  I have looked at Basecamp and Gamin Explorer but these platforms don't seem to be supported anymore.  Do people still use Basecamp?  I should think that Garmin would just fold this stuff into their sleeker GC package but maybe not?

  • I've seen Basecamp mentioned quite a few times on the forum, so I thought it was still used. I'm a Linux user so I didn't really have any idea about this software, but the specifications for Windows on https://www.garmin.com/en-US/software/basecamp/ indeed do look to be kind of antiquated.

Some time back there was a beta for the Eplore app, that I believe should have been a follow-on to Basecamp, but I could not get it to work with the 5 Plus. Explore, is, I think, past the beta stage and still current, because it supports newer devices: explore.garmin.com/.../GarminUser
