It is possible to continually record temperature using tempe sensor?

I camp a lot. I'd really like to know the temperature range was outside my tent while I was sleeping, mostly I guess to see how low the temperature got. I have the tempe sensory. Is there any widget or anything that can give me that data? I considered even running an activity all night or something. I don't care about battery life being used up, I can always charge it the next day.

  • If you run an activity that would work.  I use a tempe during long trail runs/skimo to record temp during the activity.  It would probably even work to do an indoor activity with no GPS to save battery.

  • great question.

i just ordered a Tempe for this exact purpose (though I am a hammock camper).  I am using a ThermoDrop for this purpose at present.  Does a decent job of displaying current and recording hi and low.

I'd like a widget that records the overnight temp when not using a hike activity to do it.

Sounds like it will require creating a 'sleep' activity' or something similar...

  • That widget displays the temp but it doesn't say whether it will record continuous temps..  as in, overnight.

  • I just tried to install and run the app. No recording, as far as I can see.

  • Yeah, a "sleep" activity is a good idea. Something that turns off gps and such but keeps the tempe data coming. I feel like it wouldn't be that hard for Garmin to do either. It already knows how to record the temperatures obviously. I guess I'll have to play around with doing an indoor activity per leftride's suggestion all night long and see if anything times out during the night.

  • mostly I guess to see how low the temperature got.

The tempe transmits 3 pieces of data:

    • current temperature
    • max temperature from the last 24h
    • min temperature from the last 24h

The last two are collected by the tempe itself, even when not connected to anything.

So if all you need is the lowest temperature of the night, and not the entire history of temperature, then you don't have to run an activity for the entire night. Just check the tempe values in the morning.

  • That's perfect.  It's exactly what I need for overnight.  Everything else should be captures by the Hike activity when on the move.

Is there a dedicated widget needed to display the current / hi / low?

  • The built-in temperature widget will show the Tempe's readings, if Tempe has been enabled in the watch's settings. However, you should be aware that Tempe only transmits its readings once in every two minutes (if I remember correctly) to prolong battery life, and the watch only listens to Tempe when the widget is enabled (to save battery). So when you activate the widget, you'll have to wait a minute or two to get the readings (current, min, and max). Similarly you can add a data screen for your hiking activity that shows all the temperatures (during an activity the watch listens to Tempe all the time, so that screen shows the last received values).
