track running Fenix 5+

Good morning all,

Do you think Garmin will put the track running application (400m) on the fenix 5+?
Thank you
  • I did track training with all my Garmin watches in the last 10 years (Forerunner 110, Fenix 1, Vivoactive 1, Fenix 3, Fenix 5+) and they were all accurate enough with the normal running app. The Track running app forces every lap to be 400m - obviously this is necessary because of the new Sony GPS-Chip.

For me it would not fit because I learned that you should run on the outer lane in the slow phase to not disturb other runners (more than 400m!) and in order to keep the time for the resting phase I sometimes run "backwards". So I would not do track training with this app and I would not buy a watch which needs this "cheating"!

  • If, for some reason, GPS isn't accurate enough, a well-calibrated foot pod may work for you. The Stryd is reportedly very accurate, but expensive. A standard foot pod calibrated specifically for the type of running (track normal shoes, track with spikes, road long slow run etc) always worked really well for me. Although it's tedious to establish calibrations, and then enter the right calibration factor before each type of run. Multiple foot pods for different use cases might be another option.

  • A proper track training is a mixture of very slow and very fast runs with a huge difference in stride length and cadence. The "stupid" Garmin footpod fails in such situations, it works best at constant pace and flat environment. The Stryd is of course something different, but as I don't have one, I can't comment on that.

  • The Stryd is similar to a standard foot pod; it is based on an accelerometer. But in addition it also has a gyroscope, and an ambient air pressure sensor. So it basically has the ability to do dead reckoning to determine speed and distance, which is quite neat. Disclaimer: I'm guessing/theorizing.

I don't have a Stryd, because a couple of specifically calibrated traditional foot pods of the 3-axis accelerometer-based type is still cheaper and they are quite accurate the way I use them. I don't expect exact distances to the meter - not from GPS or any other device, within 1% on ~10 Km - good enough for me.

BTW the small form factor foot pods have 3-axis accelerometers and are way better than the old ones with a 2-axis one inside. Like the type used with the old Nike Triax 100 or Suunto T6. Those 2-axis pods are probably what gave the foot pod an undeserved bad reputation. Although, at the time, they were awesome! Just a bit picky about the calibration and type of terrain.

  • Personally I'd be very happy to see an outdoor version of the 'indoor' track app. Running tracks are usually outside so it seems pointless having the indoor app. It's a pain having to remember to turn auto lap on/off for my interval sessions. The current 'Indoor' app would be perfect but there's no GPS and no way to turn it on Disappointed

  • If you use strava you could create a segment (a full lap of the track) and the lap times will be recorded.  Not ideal but will work every time on the track without having to remember do anything
