Fenix 5 and Wahoo Kickr Core Training Program

Hello together,

I have just bought a Wahoo Kickr Core that I managed to connect with the Fenix successfully (cadence and power is shown on the watch in Erg mode).

I also use Training Peaks to create workouts. Those are synchronized to the watch via Garmin Connect very well.

However, when I select the workout on the watch and start the training, the Kickr does not control the power according to the power target from the workout. Instead, it uses the power from the Erg mode in the Wahoo app (last power setting). Segements of the workout are available.

Does anyone know where the problem comes from? Is it related to Garmin(Fenix), Wahoo or Training Peaks? Because the information from Training Peaks are available on the watch I guess it is not related to Training Peaks. Is it possible to use the target power from a training on the fenix to control the resistance of the Kickr?

Kind regards!

How did you get "Erg mode" on the watch?

he Kickr does not control the power according to the power target from the workout.

It is a watch that need to control the power. Kickr must be connected as a controllable indoor trainer, using ant+ FE-C connection for example.
I don't think it is supported on fenix watches. What you did probably, was connecting your trainer as power & cadence source (read only) like a regular power and cadence sensor(s).

  • Sorry, maybe that was misleading. I do not have "erg mode" on the watch.

When I started the training on the watch, I was wondering what resistance is used by the trainer as it could not be the power target from the workout. I had a look at the Wahoo app and figured out, that the power still comes from the "erg mode" setting in th app. Even when the phone is not connected to the trainer, it still somehow "remembers" the last target power and uses that (instead of target power from workout).

Yes, I connected the trainer as ordinary sensor.

Ok, so I guess I need to use tools like Zwift to import my workout and connect as controllable trainer. I was hopeing that I can use the fenix as kind of a head unit to control the trainer beased on the workout in case I do not want to use Zwift.

  • I don't think it is supported on fenix watches.

A recent firmware update has added the feature to the fēnix 6 line. This DC Rainmaker article explains:

Garmin Shows Off Smart Trainer Integration on Fenix 6 & Forerunner 945 | DC Rainmaker

  • That's the feature I was looking for.

    Thanks for the link.

Let's see if they suprise us and bring it to Fenix 5 as well...

  • I would not count on it coming to anything that came out before the F6 and FR 945/745.

  • Did you manage to get it working on F5?

  • No, I am using Zwift to do my workout (TrainingPeaks) and control my trainer. I start the workout on the F5+ as soon as I start the workout in Zwift.

As menationed above, the feature (see answer from Scillonian) seems not availabe on F5+ yet. And meanwhile I doubt it will be released some time, too. Quite sad, because that is truely a substantial upgrade if you do structured workouts but do not need/want to use platforms like Zwift/Trainerroad for each session.

  • I have a 5x+ and it too is not able to connect and control the trainer. But this app connects to it just great an has all the things I need w/o the need for another login or signup. http://apps.apple.com/us/app/breakaway-indoor-training/id1541280053
