Fenix 5 Plus Series - ANT/BLE/BT v6.09 Beta

Hello Fenix 5/5S/5X Plus users,

We have a new beta update for the ANT/BLE/BT software for your devices, version 6.09. This update contains a fix for battery drain that could occur after playing music.

Fenix 5 Plus ANT/BLE/BT: https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=15292

This does not include a system software update - it only updates the ANT/Bluetooth peripheral software. This update is applicable to all Fenix 5 Plus models (5s Plus, 5 Plus, and 5x Plus). Instructions for installation are available below the change log on the page linked above.

ANT/BLE/BT v6.09 Change Log:

  • Fix battery drain after music playback

Please note, the beta updates released on these forums are not suitable for APAC region devices.

Please send all bug reports to [email protected], and indicate which model of the fenix 5 Plus series you have in the subject line.

  • Many of us have downgraded to ANT/BT/BLE 5.04 to solve the power drain after activities with music in this thread here: https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-5-plus-series/226657/fenix-5-power-drain

So I will try this beta as the change list seems to indicate this may now be fixed, I will replace 5.04 with this new v6.09 beta. I have logs of power usage from 6.06, downgrading to 5.04 (which fixed the drain after activities with music problem) and I will now do the same power usage logging with this new beta.

Edit: My battery issue is of a different nature. I should not have expected this fix to work. But thanks beta team for the fix anyhow!

    -----------------------------------

I'll test this today with an outdoors activity. BTW for me the battery drain started after every activity and was not related to music playback (don't use it). The BLE connection to GCM would remain active and the watch didn't go in low power mode.

Update: Unfortunately it does not fix the issue for me. I am on FW 12.71, so maybe I should try it again with FW 13.00, not sure. The only way I can get the watch in low power mode is switching off BLE on the phone or on the watch.

  • Your drain isn't related to music, and the Changelist for this targets a fix for music related drain.

So why are you expecting a fix for an unrelated issue?

Wishful thinking I guess. I thought using a BLE sensor would not be so different as using BLE headphones. But even after not using the BLE sensor, after any activity the problem is there. Reboot the watch after activities solves it.

  • Headphones do not run on BLE - BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) is for accessories like heart rate belts / speed and cadence etc

Music playback is high energy, even without firmware bugs. This is why the drain issue was so noticeable after activities with music for many of us in the battery drain thread.

  • At least for me, this beta driver fixed the power drain, now back to normal 0.4 %/h, even after using headphones during an activity (after FW 13 it went up to >2 %/h for me).

Same here. It's the first time since I bought the watch (2 months) that I have reasonable power usage. It shows 0,3 - 0,4% per hour; with a few activities it went down from full charge to about 50% during three days. Before I had to recharge every two days, it ate battery like crazy. Using FW 13.0.

  • My HRM Run don't work since the update to firmware 13.00
