Fenix 5X Plus battery draining

My battery has been acting out of character after the ransomware attack. Noticeable battery draining rapidly from full charge to 10% in 2 days. Normally it takes 8 to 9 days with connection to phone and regular workout (running with GPS). I contacted Garmin support team and they said it was nothing to do with the ransomware which only affected online services.

So I can only imagine it's pure coincidence that this is happening. I love my Fenix 5X plus. Had it for 2 years now with no battery issues until 3 weeks ago.

After going through a full reset and removing apps from IQ, the draining continued. Garmin Support then quoted $140 to do a full exchange of the watch as it was outside of warranty. I am not ready to spend anymore money than I already had on this watch. Paid close to $1k for this watch and expected it to last longer than two years, so not ready to spend another $140 for what I think is a glitch from Garmin, which is no fault of mine. Is anyone facing the same issue and got it addressed?

I am almost regretting my choice when I was choosing between the Apple Watch and this. I had been with Garmin since 2008, so this does not happen all the time.

  • I did the update a couple of days ago and now battery drain is back to normal even using BT music

  • Can you please explain what you mean by "back to normal"? Do you mean the battery drain has continued or that the update has solved the battery drain issue and watch is now back to normal?

  • Hello, after the update watch is back to normal and battery drain has been solved.

  • Got it. Thanks!!;)

    Same problem here.

  • This is why I'm still on SW12 and ANT driver 5.04!

  • We in the F6 forum are complaining about battery drain since last update, too. Especially in the standby mode. I wonder, whether it is a coincidence or not...

    Hi,

I'm highly dubious that the timing of your watch issue at the same time as the ransomware outage is coincidence. My Tactix Bravo went 'nuts' for 36-48 hours - wouldn't save activities, kept asking for GPS signal and reverting to the positioning screen, responded only sporadically to button presses etc. - and then died (or at least the screen did). Garmin support also claimed it's nothing to do with the outage but frankly I don't believe them. The watch is with Garmin UK who have had it for 4 weeks without a resolution yet. They appear overwhelmed - I only get any hint of progress when I phone them - and today the phone line has been taken offline.

Come on Garmin - look after your long-suffering and high-spending customers!!

  • These screenshots with battery drain percentages don't help much without additional information. Different watch models (5s+, 5+, and 5x+) have different sized batteries, so the percentages are necessarily different.

Also, the watch's battery percentage meter is not linear (at least on my 5+). When the battery is almost full, I get 0.0 %/h for several hours after charging, then it shows 0.1 %/h until the battery is 80 % full, then it shows my "normal" 0.3 %.

And, battery consumption is also different on different watch faces (especially CIQ faces), depends on whether phone connections is on, how many notifications you got, etc. etc.
