Fenix 5X Plus battery draining

My battery has been acting out of character after the ransomware attack. Noticeable battery draining rapidly from full charge to 10% in 2 days. Normally it takes 8 to 9 days with connection to phone and regular workout (running with GPS). I contacted Garmin support team and they said it was nothing to do with the ransomware which only affected online services.

So I can only imagine it's pure coincidence that this is happening. I love my Fenix 5X plus. Had it for 2 years now with no battery issues until 3 weeks ago.

After going through a full reset and removing apps from IQ, the draining continued. Garmin Support then quoted $140 to do a full exchange of the watch as it was outside of warranty. I am not ready to spend anymore money than I already had on this watch. Paid close to $1k for this watch and expected it to last longer than two years, so not ready to spend another $140 for what I think is a glitch from Garmin, which is no fault of mine. Is anyone facing the same issue and got it addressed?

I am almost regretting my choice when I was choosing between the Apple Watch and this. I had been with Garmin since 2008, so this does not happen all the time.

  • Read the Fenix 5+ power drain thread. There are described the same problems and procedures for how to fix them. It's exactly the same, you have to get a driver for your F5x plus watch tip

I've had the same issue the past weeks after the Bluetooth update 6.06 was flashed. Even after the recent firmware update to 13.0, it did not improve (recharging was needed almost every second day).

I did not want to mess with manually flashing older firmware. Then, I found this:

After a "hard power off" instead of the normal power off/restart, the battery life is now back to normal. You "hard power off" by pressing the "Light" button until the watch completely is off - then, turn it on as usual.

I did not yet exercise with Bluetooth headset and HR strap... hence, the problem still might be around. I would update this thread in case I notice another power drain.

Hope that helps & best regards!

  • This is the only way to achieve low power consumption with these drivers each time you restart.
But most people don't want to do that because it's annoying!
So the best solution at the moment is downgrade ANT 6.03 or 6.06 to ANT 5.04 !!!

All, the fast battery drain is back. For some days it was back to the normal 10% per day of battery drop after the hard power off. Then I connected to a bluetooth headset. Even though the headset was turned off, later that day I noticed that the battery kept dropping at a much higher rate. It looks as if the Fenix does not realize that the other side is turned off. That definitely worked before the update to 6.06 as I'm using the same headsets.

I agree that downgrading might be the only option now... but Garmin has to fix this.

In addition, I also made the post to raise awareness that there are two power off modes - at least I was not aware of that before.
