I cannot get it to connect to wifi

It says on app it is connected and then when I test the connection it says it could not connect. Fenix 5 plus then freezes most of the time trying to reconnect to the phone. I cannot download any spotify play lists. I tried disconnecting wifi and reconnecting on app. I tried doing it manually on phone or on Garmin Express. I tried rebooting the watch to factory updates. I have been an Apple Watch guy but wanted to make the switch for the better features of the Fenix like downloading spotify playlists. Seems like this is an issue a ton of people have and there doesn't seem to be an answer. Looking for any help before i return it and go back to apple products. I was frustrated with a lot of things with the apple watch and how limited its features were... but atleast it connected to wifi...

Any help before I just give up would be appreciated..

  • When the F5+ was launched it had severe issues with WiFi Networks. This was improved by several updates and should now work with most Routers (2,4 GHz, not with 5 GHz). So make sure you have a new Firmware installed.

The only router I found so far which does not work with my F5+ is a Vodafone Cable Router. With that I can connect and the test is also positive, but when I try to sync I get the message "no Internet Connection" but there is no freezing of the watch or issues with Bluetooth. All other Routers I tested (Work, Hotels, Home of Kids and Parents) work without any issues.

As your watch freezes, I would recommend to contact Garmin Service!

  • I have very similar problems on my new Garmin Fenix 5 plus. Since I got the watch I have not been able to connect to a wifi. Have tested a couple of different ones. My watch also freezes after each failed attempt to add a new wifi. Have tried to add new wifi via the watch, via the connect app and via garmin express. I have tried factory reset but nothing seems to help. Did you ever solve your problem?

  • I have the same issue and also a friend with same F5+. After having contacted with Garmin Service they have tested It and answered that there is no issue but the problem It is still present. They told me that I should only use Garmin signed app and no other one even downloaded from IQ, like Spotify... I have sniffered the connetion and It seems to feeeze after address resolution protocol requests. So wifi works but It does not continue the internet connection and after that I have to do a hard reset if the test is done using Garmin Connect app. Its looks like a software issue, waiting for new firmware that could solve the problem.

  • Hi,

I finally solved my issue when I changed my router from some mixed 802.11 b/g/n setting to one that did not include n. Can’t remember exactly what I ended with but I think I am on b/g now which works. Might also be plain b or g.

    Hope it helps!

  • Hi,

maybe this will help someone too. When I got my F5+ I could't connect to my home wifi, but when I created a wifi hotspot from my phone the watch was able to connect to it.

So the watch wifi HW and SW was OK, and my router was just setup incorrectly.

Watch is fine with wifi being on: 2,4 ghz b/g/n, WPA2 too, the problem was channel. I setup mine long time ago manually to 13.

When lowering the channel to for example 8, watch was able to connect to wifi without a problem.

I just replicated the issue, set the wifi again manually to channel 13 (watch was unable to connect), set it back to 8 and everything was ok.

  • Moving back to b or g Wifi is not a real option. It would induce a significant speed reduction for all other devices.

The observed issues definitely indicate a Software issue on the Garmin F5+!

    Best Regards

  • Totally agree. F5+ connects to wifi bgn 2.4 correctly as it can be seen in the managed device list of the router. But F5+ always show internet connection failure.

  • I have the same problem with my F5S+ It will not connect to wifi, and after you get the error not able to connect, you have to time it and press the backwards button before the whole watch freezes and you have to do a hard reset. I have to jogg with my phone to have music now, defeats the purpose. Hope that someone in this forum knows better.

    High hopes.

  • You can transfer music from your computer with the cable.
