Marine chart map update

Is there a plan to update marine maps to 5X plus?   I was kayaking and the maps were pretty old.

Half the map, it was showing me on shore when I was in the middle of the river.

Or, how can I remove the map and replace it with something else?

  • So I would look for free osm maps and install them and have a look, if they are more accurate as the installed Garmin Topo active americas north (if this is your used map).

  • Has anybody openseamap to actually work on a Garmin Fenix watch? I have a Fenix 5X and the watch didn't "picking up" the map when I put it on the watch.

  • Have looked at one of the Openseamap gmapsupps and noticed the map priority is set to 20.

When I started creating maps for my Fenix I had similar problems, in that they wouldn't show on my watch - the solution was to raise the priority to 30 and recompile the map. I've had no problems since then. This doesn't help you much but disabling all other maps on your watch may help

  • Interesting... could you explain how to update the map priority setting for OpenSeaMap?

In the mean time, I got my OpenSeaMap to work on the Fenix 5X. I found that you need to download the open sea maps in the “latin1” format, not the “utf-8” format. It worked for me with that setting.

I did run into a different issue in that my Fenix 5x will only load 1 OpenSeamap, even if I put in 2 different maps on the device covering 2 different areas. It picks the biggest map of the 2 and only shows that as a selectable map in Map Configuration. It would only show the smaller map, after I deleted the larger map. Weird... I solved it by just down loading 1 large map from OpenSeaMap and uploading that one. Does anybody have experience with this issue?

  • I started using the OpenSeaMap. I am not seeing any depth information or reefs/rocks on them. Is this a known issue or am I doing something wrong? Both depths and reef/rocks are crucial to have show up, for my use at least :-).
