another battery drain question....

Hi,

Was reading recent posts to see if some recent update has caused problems, but nothing stands out.

Have had my 5+ for about a year and battery life has always been decent.  This week all of a sudden it's draining fast - like 1%-2% per hour when just sat at my desk.  I've not changed any settings nor installed any new widgets.

Is anyone aware of a recent update causing problems?  Or seen this kind of thing before?

Software Version 12.00

CIQ 3.1.8

GPS 2.6

Wi-Fi 2.5

ANT/BLE/BT 6.06

Sensor Hub 2.4

Thank you in advance for any guidance you can offer

  • Same, mine drains 1%-2% per hour as well doing nothing.  I'm on 12.00.  On reddit, someone who has the 5S+ said they narrowed it down to the 12.00 update being the culprit for the battery drain.  He downgraded back to 11.74 and his battery life is back to normal as before with no excessive battery drain.  I can't find the 11.74 firmware for the 5+ anywhere though.

  • I just turned it off and on again. It helped. Have you used bluetooth headphones before? I did, even disconnected probably fenix 5 Plus is still searching in the background?

  • Yeah, on my runs I use bluetooth headphones with music from the 5+.  How do you complete disconnect the headphones from the 5+ after an activity?  All I do is end the activity, stop the music, and turn off the headphones.

Is there a way to completely disconnect the headphones from the watch after an activity in case the 5+ is searching in the background for the headphones?

  • I’ve worked in IT my whole life and I never even thought to turn it off and on again.   Seem to have done the trick though.  3% drain in 8 hours is much better.

    thanks for the help!

  • I also am having terrible battery life which I think started getting worse since 12.00, I get approx 2 days per charge.

Yesterday on Sunday 16th 2PM UK time I charged the battery to 100%

By 5PM (3 hours later) battery was at 95%

By 7:40PM battery was at 91%

By 10:10PM battery was at 88%

At 5:15AM Monday 17th, battery was at 77%

At 8:00AM Monday 17th, 18 hours after full charge, battery was at 72%, 28% loss over 18 hours.

I am using the Garmin default watch face, and have no datefields active. Battery seems to drain about 1.5% per hour.

I have taken photos of the watch face showing power drain - too be honest since I had this Fenix 5 Plus since April this year I have been lucky to get 3.5 days usage per charge, but it has got a lot worse over the last couple of weeks.

  • It was my pure guess, battery drain issue may be caused by several causes... Turning off earphones should stop watch searching for it. So turn on/off your watch to help with the battery issue as I said before. It annoys me that there is always bugs in the software, old ones and new one, it seems software is always in beta stage even in 20 years' time.... :(

  • I think 3% per 8hrs is normal for Fenix 5 Plus...

  • Since I had a Fenix 1, I have not seen a single update without complaints about battery life….

As already mentioned in another thread, I have not seen any changes after the update of my F5+ to 12.0 and battery life is absolutely o.k.
Often 3rd party apps are the issue and it can happen that apps begin to drain battery after an update of the watch (I had that once with a watchface on an F3).
Normally switching the watch off and on again solves many issues.

Another important point is, to charge the watch with a high capacity charger, not with the cheapest one and not on a Computer!

  • AND Try to see if the watch is (desperately) trying to sync something big with the phone via bluetooth, keep Garmin Connect Mobile on and alive (not in standby) until the synch is over. The phone and the watch are computers, so reboot should be the first obvious thing to do for anyone in the event of any malfunction...
