Fenix 5+ power drain

Hello,

I've got a battery drain issue with my fenix 5+. They were not in use for the last 2 months. After powering up, updating (to SW 11.00) and charging the battery life became completely disastrous. In smartwatch mode it consumed aroud 0.4..0.5% per hour. But after first outdoor activity with GPS it started to burn the power like demon. Average consumption ranged from 1.5% to 2% per hour and never less. I tried rebooting and soft reset; this helped until the first GPS activity. After that the power drain returned to the extra level. All external sensors (including wrist HR) were turned off. Moreover, I've tried the beta SW (11.73) - nothing new: after resetting everything looks fine till the first GPS connect.

I love my watches, but the power drain is far off the specification and dissapointes me. I see that without any sport activity battery works well and could hold the charge up to 8..9 days. But it doesn't fit me.
Do you have any idea how to troubleshoot this?

PS: I tried to fully discharge and recharge the battery to recalibrate the circuits.

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi,

do you have the 5 plus or the 5x plus? I try to downgrade my 5plus without success.

  • Above you have contributions from 5135968 who added links to his 5 plus SW as well as ANT driver v5.04. So download it there, and you should be able to install it in your 5 plus watch tip! If you can't find it, write me your email, and I'll send you the SW with the v5.04 driver to your 5plus!

  • Thanks for this offer but I dont know how to send you a private message. Am I right that I need the BLE Driver 6.03 to downgrade to 5.04? If that is true, I have a problem since I am at BLE 6.06.

  • I have no idea if I didn't have 6.06, maybe it's possible to downgrade from 6.06 to 5.04! Here is a link to the ANT 5.04 driver on 5plus, so try either, the option will appear on the watch after disconnecting from the PC or you will not see anything there and the option to downgrade will not offer it to you, but nothing worse can happen to you !!! :

  • Thanks, I already tried this a few times. BLE stays on 6.06. I think the possibility to downgrade from 6.06 is not available. So i have to wait for a fix from Garmin with a future FW. Thank you for your help.

  • Many of us have successfully downgraded from 6.06 to 5.04 and solved the drain problem.

Are you sure you are putting the file in the \REMOTESW folder?

  • I thought this was just another battery after software update thread..... but I've tested my watch last night and can confirm.... after activity.... Watch battery is up to 1.6% per hour through the night..... I restarted the watch this morning.... and I'm down to 0.26% an hour...

At least I can downgrade...... what a mess!....

  • Yes this is quite a specific drain after activity problem. I think you need to be using either music and / or external sensors during activity to see the post-activity drain.

You can reset the watch with a long press of the Light button, but the drain will probably return on the next activity.

The downgrade solves the problem, with no need for resets. Please also report the problem to Garmin as well.

  • All reported to product support just now... I also sent screen shots of battery drain.... and pics of this thread... and pics of all the threads on the main page..

The more that it's reported... the more attention this will obviously receive.

    Cheers : -)

  • it's weird that someone did it from 6.06 to 5.04 and you can't do it ! You are definitely putting it in the REMOTESW folder ???
