Fenix 5 plus - random reboot

Dear Garmin Community,

I need help on my fenix 5 plus.

It's been ~ 6 weeks I've been experiencing random reboots with my fenix 5 plus (purchased jun 2018). no issue before.

Often during an activity with/without music, but not only. happened to find the watch simply shut down one morning when waking up.

I tried soft resets, and eventually ran 'Delete Data and Reset Settings' command. issue still persists, despite seems to occur less often.

I just removed as well the very last custom field I had installed, will try to run an activity without it.

Anyone, any idea?

I attach 2 txt files contained in Garmin/Debug directory: err_log.txt, SNS_ERR.txt.

Please note there are 2 additional files i cannot upload, probably because of the file extension:ERR_LOG.BAK,  SNS_ERR.BIN

  • update: just had 1hr tennis workout. Within this hour, watch has rebooted once , plus  2 times when it simply stopped (had to start it up by long pressing the light button)

  • Typically resetting will fix this issue. If not, then a factory reset. I'm assuming that's what you did when you say "Delete Data and Reset Settings." If done correctly, after restarting the initial prompt would be to select language.

  • Also, here is a list of steps you can try: Outdoor Wearable Freezes, Reboots or Won't Power On

If after all that, you're still having issues, suggest contacting Garmin Support. Even if your device is out of warranty, it would still be worth a try.

  • hi Seilogramp,

    thx for your answer!

I confirm that i went through with what i call hard reset (leading to watch being wiped out, selecting language, reconfiguring data screens,...)

Point is, I did it via the regular watch commands (parameter/System/Reset/Delete Data and Reset Settings), not via simultaneously pressing whatever buttons (Start+Lap + light..)

Last, worth noticing anyway watch directly started over from SW 11.0 . I believe it is normal, since only latest firmware is kept in  memory.

  • hi Seilogramp,

thx again for your answer! will definitely have a look and keep you posted.

note: in the meantime I ended up with opening a ticket to Garmin support, . my watch being still within warranty

  • my watch being still within warranty

Well that's good news. Also forgot to mention to try attaching your watch via USB cable to Garmin Express This will update settings and download updates if any are available. At the very least, your activities will sync up so you don't lose anything.

  • thx.

just read article you shared and took those actions:

    - plugging watch to PC (via genuine Garmin cable)

    - deleting 'Activity' folder and 'Newfiles' folder ('GPX' was advised, i thought Newfiles was the closest to)

    - running soft reset (~30s pressing light button to shut down, then press agian to start up)

Despite I had done this before the hard reset, it may be worth another try now, thanks again for the heads-up!

Do you know by chance when firmware 11.0 was released? I suspect my issues have started with it... (it was back on ~early march)
