Turn-by-turn prompts using Strava Routes

Hi,

My question comes down to a combination of the difference between navigating using "Follow Course" and "Use Map" option, along with compatibility of the (hugely popular, though possibly more so on the Edge series of devices) Strava Routes app.

I get the basics:

  • Follow Course = you want to follow an exact course, turn points are baked into the course file you have generated/imported and the watch simply shows the alert at the correct point.
  • Use Map = the watch uses its onboard routable maps, along with your routing preferences, to generate a route closely matching your selected course (how close depends on any differences between the maps used), turn points are dynamically generated to keep to heading towards the next part of your route.

When using Garmin Connect to design/import a route, everything seems to work as it should - and specifically the two different options above both do as expected (TBT for "Use Map" has more detail, eg. road names, whereas "Use Course" are just directional arrows).

However when using Strava Routes to import a course, the "Follow Course" option results in zero TBT directions - it's as though these aren't included in the course file. Has anyone else noticed this? Seems quite a miss for such a popular (and hugely handy!) app. "Use Maps" seems to work for TBT, with the caveat you might be rerouted.

Strava Routes works perfectly on Edge devices.. then again I guess under the covers this will be using a "Use Maps" style option (at least for the majority of road riding I've used it for).
