Deleting maps from a Fenix 5 Plus using a MacBook Pro

Hi all. I've gone through most of the threads and can't find a solution to my problem. I hope that someone can assist. I can't update the software as I don't have sufficient space. I need to offload some maps that I downloaded for a recent trip to Europe (I live in Cape Town).

According to Garmin South Africa, the only way to delete maps is via a connection to a PC/notebook. I've got a MacBook Pro and Finder does not show the Garmin on the left hand pane as it used to. I believe Apple no longer supports this format?  I don't have a Windows machine. Is there any way I can use my MacBook, My mobile or the watch to delete some of the European maps?

Garmin local's solution is for me to courier my watch to Johannesburg for them to sort it out :( I'm hoping that I someone out there has an alternative solution. If I've missed a thread, apologies, please point me to it. Thanks, Keith

  • For the Garmin to show on your desktop, you can install an app call Android File Transfer...

  • You might want to let your local support team know about Android File Transfer for Mac users too. Their lack of knowedge is typical of 'one-eyed' Windows users. lol! :-) Bit annoying that Garmin has not pushed out a global note to their support channels though.

Thank Rugby4all (btw: I'm celebrating South Africa's win over Wales :) ). Thanks for the support re the Android FT solution. I've loaded on the Android app, but the app can't find my watch. I've watched Active JR's video and have tried his troubleshooting steps e.g., quitting Garmin Exp; rebooting my MacBook, restarting my watch, setting the Fenix's USB transfer protocol to Garmin, without success. Have upgraded OS to Catalina. Methinks the easiest route will be to find a friend with a Windows machine, but I'd be grateful if there is a special sequencing or something else I'm missing.

Philip, I'll definitely let our local Garmin know when I've succeed. Thanks, Keith

  • Former Member There should be nothing more to do other than install Android File Transfer, connect your watch to your computer, and access the files. No need to change the mode on the watch. You can make sure your watch is properly connected by syncing in Garmin Express first.

You do need to make sure Garmin Express is properly shut down and not just closed (selecting the red dot). Make sure you properly quit GE before firing up AFT.

btw I'm in mourning after the rugby on Saturday :-(

Thanks Philip. Looks like I had a sequencing issue with my Mac and having Express running in the background. I used my wife's MacB and finally managed to delete 3 Gig of European maps and upgrade the software. I appreciated the support. Best Keith

  • Good to hear. GE will ask to close AFT but not the other way around sadly. I to have had GE 'hang' in and refuse to close when expressly order to lol! I've had to fire up the Activity Monitor and close the process from there before now.

Good result for the rugby too! Well-deserved especial after getting beaten by the All Blacks in pool play. Must have been because SA had an easier route to the final ;-)
