Fenix 5X plus - Version 9.00 & iOS 13

I'm having endless issues with syncing. When I try sync the watch on the app it starts then just fails, and brings up a red exclamation icon saying "Sync Failed" if you tap Sync Now, it still fails.

Something not right, and I don't know if it is iOS 13 (ver 13.1.3) or the watch version. I have unpaired and repaired with no luck at all!

The only way I can sync now is if I plug it into my PC and use Garmin Express

Any ideas on how to fix this, very annoying, issue?

I got another even more annoying issue.

When i start the app, it randomly asks me to login and register a device...

When i kill the app, and start it again it sometimesshows the option to bypass the login process...

Deleting and reinstalling the app does not change anything.

Garmin definately lives in a parallel universe where everything is working fine, the teletubbies are running around and feeding them with money. I definately never gonna waste my money in a Garmin product again!

  • I'm having the exact same issue with my 5+. It was all working fine and then suddenly seemed to break. I don't recall there being an app update but I assume there must have been. Whats more concerning is there have been at least 2 app updates since and still no resolution.

For me the problem seemed to started after a run which failed to auto upload. I found the app would start to sync, and then apparently fail with the same red exclamation mark.

For now, I've been either using the Garmin Express app for the PC to sync, or turning my WIFI hotspot on on my phone (if I'm out and about) and letting it sync that way. FYI, its likely this might fail due to what someone already mentioned about being told an upload is already in progress. If I turn bluetooth off on my phone and wait for the Garmin to drop the connection I can then get the WIFI to connect and sync. It's a pain but it works flawlessly.

I have tried the watch on both the release brance and the beta software, and prior to iOS 13.2 coming out I upgraded to the beta of that as well to see if the behaviour was any different. Unfortunately it wasnt. I've also tried removing the app and deregistering the watch with the phone and even that didn't sort the issue.

This has been going on for some time now and I find it staggering that Garmin aren't doing to more to either address this or to at least acknowledge the issue.

  • Toggling bluetooth is indeed the fastest way to get it going again for me. I've now got the bluetooth toggle option enabled under Controls, along with "Sync" and "Wifi" (the former attempts to sync via phone, the latter attempts to sync via wifi). It's annoying that I have to do this, though.

  • Also only started experiencing the issue in the last 2 weeks.  Bluetooth on/off, smartphone on/off, Fenix 5X+ on/off.  One or a combination of these would usually solve the problem and it would work fine a for a few days and then get buggy again.  Yesterday I just could not get the watch to sync over Bluetooth no matter what I did.  my iOS was still on 12.x.  Last night I updated to iOS 13.2 and so far Connect has been much quicker and responsive.  No syncing problems, touch wood!

  • IMHO the problems have been since the iOS 13.0 update. There's been different behaviour from one 13.X to the next 13.X update, and as various updates come out to Garmin Connect for iOS. Each update to both iOS and GC has helped a little, but they still don't have it quite right between them.

  • I'll update after a day or two or if I experience any issues, so far so good

    iOS: 13.2

    Garmin Connect iOS: 4.24.1

    Fenix 5X+: 9.10

  • Just chatted with Garmin about it, apparently there is a fix for the app inbound soon. But they cannot say what "soon" means since this issue has been ongoing for weeks. They've acknowledged to me it's a problem on the app since the release of iOS 13.

  • Garmin Connect 4.24.2 was just released. Unsure exactly what it fixes because Garmin use generic text in the "what's new" field. All I know is that it apparently fixes a bug some were having getting the latest weather data (this was working fine for me) - got this from a different thread though so I'm unsure of anything else.

Edit: Also iOS 13.2.2 is out, with a fix for background app refresh. If the background app refresh bug contributed to the problems then this new iOS will definitely help. I can't see any mention of updates to bluetooth device connectivity in the description, though.

Because of the nature of the issues I experience, I won't be able to make any judgements on if it's resolved or not for me for a few days at the very least.

  • 13.2.2 seems to be fixing the syncing issues for me so far. It wasn't just Garmin devices having these issues, so I do think it was OS 13 related

  • Well, I can't talk for anyone else but GC4.24.2 and iOS13.2.2 seem to have fixed this problem. I've gone the whole weekend without a single failed sync - something not possible since the iOS 13.0 update.
