Bluetooth vs wifi

Having upgraded from the 5 to the 5 plus I’m confused about the role of WiFi. With the 5 activities would automatically upload. Now I’ve enabled WiFi on the plus I have to wait until I get home to upload activities. With that in mind I’ve now disabled the WiFi connection and now I my plus is showing as disconnected and I can’t connect. What gives???

  • Ideally you assign the WIFI-Sync to a hot key. When you come home after an activity you press the button and the activity and other data are uploaded without a phone. Also updates are downloaded during the WiFi-sync. For me this is a very comfortable function because I rarely connect my watch to my phone.

Wifi is also needed to download Spotify playlists, but I do not use this function.

Only issue is that my F5+ does not sync with some routers, so it currently does not work at my home but perfectly at work. This is a known issue of that watch (my old F3 connected perfectly with both routers) and will hopefully be solved in a future update.

It you're referring to your Fenix 5 automatically uploading via Bluetooth to your phone the 5+ should do that as well, regardless of whether you have WiFi set up or not. It sounds like you might need to take a look at your pairing settings with your phone. Make sure it is paired and set up in the Garmin Connect mobile app. Also, if you are using an iPhone and recently upgraded to Ios 13 you will need to open the app and give it permission to use Bluetooth.
