Pool swim drill pace

My swim tonight consisted of a lot of drills which, when saved, seemed to show the correct average pace of my intervals only (ignoring drills). However when checking all intervals, I can see that Garmin is displaying an average pace for my drills also (usually it would just show 0). This is consistent when uploading to Strava also - but Strava doesn't distinguish the drill and overall avg pace is affected.

Anyone else noticed this with their swims and if so how do I fix?

Thanks

  • If data is not displaying as you'd like in Strava, then you need to contact Strava.

  • Ignore the Strava bit - that was just to say it's also affecting that app because Garmin has calculated drills with pace when it shouldn't do.

The problem is that GC has interpreted the drill data with average speed and it never does this. Drill sets are always given a 0 or blank (-:--) for average.

Just checked the intervals on my watch and it actually shows the drills correct with a blank pace, so it appears to be a fail with GC.

  • I've emailed Garmin about it. It will affect all 3rd party apps GC connects to by the looks. Not sure if this is related to just version 8.40. But my last pool swim which wasn't affect by this was on 28th Aug which I believe is when that on or before the the update was released.

On a side note - I'm sure I didn't even see a notification for updating my F5Plus. Usually I am eager to get my hands on it, but this one seems to have installed without me noticing. Hopefully open water distance is a little better with it now.

  • That makes sense to a degree although you could argue since you input a distance for the drill that it would be easy to calculate a pace. Have to confess it's not something I've looked at after a swim as I'm only interested in the swim pace for the interval. I'm not interested in the overall pace for the swim. I couldn't actually tell you if it ever recorded a pace for any drill interval. I'll have to have a look.

I just checked the swim I did last night and you're right that it now assigns a pace to drill intervals though as you noticed it still calculates average pace correctly by leaving the drill intervals out. I'm actually ok with this since in a drill I still did cover the distance and for certain drills it could be useful to know and since it still leaves them out of average pace. I think the issue might be more on the third party app's end. Sounds like they need to update to not include intervals when that interval is tagged as a drill.

  • Ok thanks, not just me then.

And it appears it's GC that's doing this with the data as the watch is still showing the drill intervals correctly as blank

I'd think this would therefore happen with many users not just Fenix 5 plus

It's definitely Connect doing it since I'm using a Fenix 6X now. Not sure when it happened since I took a bit of a break from swimming (and biking...and running...) after a triathlon on August 25th so your timeline of sometime after the 28th sounds about right.
