As in subject, altimeter only works during an activity after update to 8.40.

Altimeter widget doesn't display data in watch mode

Tried to calibrate the altimeter, probably best to try DEM calibration first

Apologies if this seems obvious but

    a) have you tried restarting the watch?

    b) considered trying the 8.77 beta in case that helps?

  • Exactly what does it mean that it "doesn't display data in watch mode"?

Do you get an empty space where the numbers should be? Do you get "--"? Do you get any error message?

Is the behaviour the same in the ABC widget?

The altimeter widget simply display no altitude, no data and no graph.

When I start an activity data is collected.

When I stop the activity, the widget report last read altitude for hours. It seems no update is received anymore. After 4 hours the graph disappear.

    Any use ?

TLDR :) Is your watch in "Barometer mode" ??

    From the manual -

    Barometer Settings

Hold MENU, and select Settings > Sensors &
    Accessories > Barometer.
Plot: Sets the time scale for the chart in the barometer
    widget.
Storm Alert: Sets the rate of barometric pressure
change that triggers a storm alert.
Watch Mode: Sets the sensor used in watch mode. The
Auto option uses both the altimeter and barometer
according to your movement. You can use the
Altimeter option when your activity involves changes
in altitude, or the Barometer option when your
activity does not involve changes in altitude

  • Just to add to the convo, mine is working fine. Now, I did just factory reset my watch the other day, which was not as painful as I thought it would be (for a different issue). I just happen to read this, and thought I would share.

    I just observed the following.

First... I am in a building where i got no GPS reception at all.

Altitude screen in watch mode gave me a plausible height.

I started an activity for testing purpose and i saw on the map-screen that the watch still estimated my position at the end of my last activitiy in the mountains.

So far so goot - since no GPS is available.

I then stoped the test-activity and noticed that the altitude on the watch-mode altitude screen jumped from the former plausible height to the height where the watch beleaved me to be (maountain of last outdoor activity)  ALTHOUGH there was no GPS available in the meantime.

To me this is a bug since the watch MUST NO assume that the location at the beginning of an activity WITHOUT valid GPS signal is the same as it was when the last activity ended.
