8.71 Change Log Notes:

  • Made several improvements for CIQ music apps.
  • Made several improvements and bug fixes for Golf.
  • Fixed an issue where the device would appear to be frozen when the user tries to access wallet on the device immediately after deleting wallet in the Garmin Connect Mobile App.

Please note, the beta updates released on these forums are not suitable for APAC region devices.

Please send all bug reports to [email protected], and indicate which model of the fenix 5 Plus series you have in the subject line.

  • When I create a course directly from the watch by adding two POIs, the course it creates is simply a straight line between the two points instead of using the available paths.  I first noticed this in Hiking mode which is configured to use the pre-installed TopoActive maps but it behaves the same if I pick locations in the city in walk (OSM maps) or cycling mode (TopoActive).

I am running the 8.71 beta release and am wondering if this issue might be related.  Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I don't need tips on creating courses using Garmin Connect, Basecamp, or tools like dwMap as I'm already familiar with those.  I would like the ability to create courses on the fly from the watch if need be in situations where those tools aren't available.

  • When I create a course directly from the watch by adding two POIs, the course it creates is simply a straight line between the two points instead of using the available paths.

This is a setting for the activity:

    1. Open the settings for an activity, for example Hiking.
    2. In the menu, select "Routing"
    3. In the next menu, select "Activity". (Yes, this decides the routing type! Believe it or not.)
    4. In the next menu, select the routing type you want. Right now, you probably have "Direct Routing" selected here, and you would probably want to select "Running & Walking" instead.

And yes, I agree that this is counter-intuitive and cumbersome. In my opinion, you should have an option to choose between direct routing and path navigation every time you start navigation within an activity, at least in activities where both are relevant. But that is not how it is. I have not found any way to decide on-the-fly, which routing type I want - which is annoying, because I use both types of routing.

The closest I have come to a solution is creating two different Walking activities, one with direct routing, and one with path navigation. But then I will have to know in advance when I start a walk, if I will need navigation later - and I will have to maintain two different Walk activities, which in itself is annoying.

    Edit:
The above applies to the situation where you are in one place and select Navigation to navigate to another. I have now re-read your question, and that was actually not exactly what you wanted. But perhaps you can use the solution anyway, so I will not delete it.

  • Thanks for the reply!  I have tested this with a routing type of 'Running and Walking' as well as Hiking.  The issue seems to be that I have to select 'Use Map' under the Courses setting in the Routing menu to force the watch to find best route.  The weird thing is, if you view the course on a map it just draws a straight line between the two points no matter what routing settings you have.  I guess this is a minor bug considering that the actual routing works but it would be nice if the watch calulated the course and previewed it on the map if the routing type is set to 'Use Map'.

  • Just following up after another round of golf.  Autoshot went back to performing as bad as ever off the tee.  It was a scrambley round but I was making very good contact off the tee and the watch simply didn't detect them most of the time.  Watch is fairly tight, worn on my lead wrist, I pause with the sole on the ground before the takeaway, just as suggested.  Here's my activity:
