I think it just counts the FULL (50m) lengths via a change of direction (compass e.g.) and NOT via GPS position. (because there would be no GPS signal at indoor pools...)

So maybe when you stop at the end of the pool after the first length, the gyro recognizes a change and think you start the second length....

  • There are number of possible reasons to get extra lenghts, see support.garmin.com/.../

    • Switching stroke type mid-length

    • Stopping or walking mid-length

    • Dramatic changes of speeds mid-length

    • Performing drills that affect arm motion

    • Interruptions from pool traffic

I've had it happen when I need to wait or slow down to be able to pass a slower swimmer or when I switched stroke type mid-length.

Maybei if you stopped mid-length or after without changing to rest interval to look at the watch, it could cause that too.

Usually, though, I get about one length short (for the whole swim) because my turning technique insn't that good.
