5+ Restarting When Calculating "Round-Trip Course

Selecting a running activity and then trying to generate a round-trip course is causing my watch to restart 100% of the time.

I'm able to select a distance for the course. It will go to the "calculating" screen. Then it restarts after a few seconds. 100% of the time. I can't seem to use the feature at all. I have used the feature in the past without problems, but it appears to be broken for me now.

I don't know if this is a related issue, but I also tried loading a course downloaded onto the watch from Garmin Connect. It would hang at the "calculating" screen when attempting to generate turn-by-turn directions (i.e., routing using the "Use Map" option). In this case, the watch would not restart, but it would just never progress past trying to calculate, even after waiting up to 5-10 minutes for 6-mile course.

I'm on the latest firmware and maps.

Anyone else see similar issues before? Could it be due to memory problems?

There was a bug with one of the beta's that did this - what version firmware are you on

(i.e are you on the latest non-beta, or latest beta)

And what do you have under routing, in the run activity

  • Firmware 7.60. For routing, I'm using - activity: running/walking, popularity routing on, courses: use map, and calculation method: minimize time.

Looking at both issues, I think you may have corrupt maps? Tried re-installing them via Garmin Express? One test would be to download a free OSM map such as from http://garmin.opentopomap.org for your region, (downlod, unzip and copt to the GARMIN folder) and make it the SOLE map activated for the RUN activity - then try the same procedure (Generate a route, test a downloaded course)

    Same thing happen?

OO One thought - are you on a Mac? Looks like a few people are seeing possible map related bugs with Garmin Express on the Mac. If you are on one, download Android File Transfer to get a Mac MTP client to install those free OSM maps for testing

  • I'm not on a Mac, but I can give this a shot. Is there a way to delete Garmin's TOPO maps and re-download them to potentially fix the corrupted files on the watch?

  • You could always try reloading the files without removing them first.

Connect to a computer and choose to reinstall the maps from GE.

    Or:

Remove all the map files to a safe location on your computer.

Fire up GE and select to download the maps.

If you de-select them in the Run Settngs - Map (i.e untick them) they shouldn't be involved with routing. Those OSM maps are routable so that should work as it looks like both your problems are related to an inability to route. Phillip has an excellent idea too of backing them up... definitely!

I have a windows PC, a droid phone, but otherwise have loaded nothing on this watch yet. I have the fenix 5s plus. Watch says version 7.10.
