Please help: Mushy or 2-step feeling? Buttons on Fenix 5x Plus, which is right one? Should I ask for replacement?

Hi Everyone,

I just had my Fenix 5x plus, at the first day I found the 2 buttons (Menu, Down) act different with other buttons.

At the first 1-2 times click, I can feel it likes a 2-step, at 1st step, I can feel it is pressed to a position, then the 2nd step it is real clicked.

In the subsequent clicks, I cannot feel the 1st step, can only feel the button is directly clicked to the end and it is hard to feel button is back to original position.

But Start, Back button act better 2-step click.

I see there are lots of replies in a post in 945 forum, it's called tactile response.

https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/running-multisport/f/forerunner-945/162560/mushy-sticky-buttons/

I am not sure is it a real problem on Fenix 5x Plus?

Should I ask for a replacement?

Why I am asking this, is some users also mentioned their replacement was pretty good at the first days, then the buttons felt "mushy or soft" again after days/weeks using.

Does your product have same situation? Is it a "Problem"?

Any suggestion?

Thank you.

  • You should be able to find a few threads about this for the 5+ too. There is some variation on the buttons. And there will be some variation on the buttons if you get a new watch.

And then a small pet peeve of mine:

I haven't read the 945 thread, but it sounds like a misuse of the term "tactile response". With tactile response, you should be able to feel when a button has registered your button press. That is actually a problem, which has annoyed me for decades: Many buttons - not only on watches - have a well defined "click feeling" when you press them. But the "click" comes before or after the button has registered your press, so the click can't be considered tactile feedback - it is only false information to the user.

  • Thanks for your reply.

So it seems to me: The mushy or 2-step feeling button is a problem, but, even I ask replacement, I may meet same "problem" on some other buttons on the replaced new watch.

    Is my understanding correct?

  • Whether it is a problem is up to you. But yes, you will probably never get "perfect tactile feeling" in those buttons.

And to be fair, it is probably easier to make a button with correct feel if it doesn't have to be waterproof to 100 meters.

  • I see. So I am asking for other users whether this situation exists in their watches as well.

If yes, I don't consider as a problem since the function does work, the final click still work.

In my country, whether consumer can ask a replacement is not upon their own feedback or satisfaction, usually, if s/he ask for a after-sales service to replace or refund, the product must be detected and confirmed by the manufacturer's engineer. - Once the engineer or service center said: yes, this is a quality issue and impacts the using of product, the consumer can get a replacement.

If not, the manufacturer saying: no, it does not impact the function, you can still pressing it the button still works, just your personal feeling. Consumer will not get the replacement.

again, so, I am asking whether this situation exists in other users products or I am too picky?

To me, it was a problem, I accepted it, but I am not sure now...

Thanks for your reply and "it is probably easier to make a button with correct feel if it doesn't have to be waterproof to 100 meters.", I understand more about it now.

My buttons aren't perfectly tactile in that sense, but they always work. I figure since I don't really use them excessively, and it doesnt impact my use of the product - to just accept it - and especially since I run in heavy rain etc I'm happier knowing that compromise in tactile file is at the benefit of waterproofing

My run/stop button has a more defined click then the others, but the others are consistently the same so that may be by design.

  • Thanks for your reply.

After discussing with forum members, I understand since I can hear the sound of "click" as responding, that is the tactile response, no matter 2 times sound or 1 time during the click.

I will enjoy it and forget about it's 2-steps tactile or 1 step.

  • I frequently find the buttons change 'feel' after a period of use or not being used. The buttons also feel differently depending on which ones get used more often. However, they work. They don't stick. And I have /have had this difference between the buttons on all the Garmin's I've owned.

    I certainly don't consider it a problem.

  • Thanks for your reply philipshambrook. I feel more relax after reading your inputs. Keeping my watch will not ask for replacement.
