Routing issues - not enough memory

When I try to navigate I frequently get an error saying
Route calculation error not enough memory.

The only way I’ve found to fix this is to turn the watch on and off again.
Then it happens again within a few days.

is anyone else having the same / similar issues?

I‘he tried turning popularity routing off and on. I’ve changed the route calculation method and it happens in all activity types.

Im on version 7.60

  • The only time I've seen this happen is when I'm trying to route to somewhere that's too far away, typically outside of the city in dense urban areas.  I think the watch has some kind of internal memory limit that can only handle routing up to a certain level of complexity.  I've been able to get around this by splitting trips into smaller parts, routing to each of those waypoints.  Within a city though you should be fine to route to anywhere.  If not, you may want to call Garmin support.

  • I had to turn my watch off and then on again..it happened to me for routing anything (3km hike)

  • This has been reported elsewhere but I cannot recall which device. Certainly worth contacting Garmin Support to let them know.. It might well be a memory leak problem?

There are many reports of a similar issue that Garmin knows about, too. The similar issue is that the device crashes on 7.6 when routing using Walking and Running and Automobile under Navigation in the US. The device goes into a boot loop until shutdown manually and restarted. There are potentially two reasons for this, in my opinion. One is that the maps in 7.6 are not routable for the routing options mentioned or the device is not able to handle the memory management required for routing.

Please add your experiences here if you have similar issues.

  • I had the same problem and fixed with an upgrade to 8.02 + complete factory reset of the watch and deleted on the watch all pre-installed maps including all setting files and folders.

Download all deleted maps via Garmin express to your Watch. Please delete also already downloaded maps from the Garmin folder on your Mac/pc. You have to download a fresh version from the Garmin site. If you have connected your smartphone please the latest version of the connect app.

My fenix is Running without this error since 1 1/2 week. Normally I had after 2-3 day this problem

  • the maps in 7.6 are not routable

In which case you'd get a message telling you that the maps are not routable.

There are a few reports of this (not many that I'm aware of) so I don't believe it's as widespread as some would have us believe. If you have any 'add-ons' CIQ data fields, watch faces etc, it might be worth taking them off and seeing if that makes a difference. If it does, add them on one-by-one and see when or if the problem returns.

And the obvious question - which map are you referring too?

  • It's well known that the TopoActive maps that are pre-installed on the five-plus series are not routable for automobiles.  This doesn't cause a memory issue, it just calculates directions 'as the crow flies'.

  • I have exactly the same problem as mentioned by the op...

    Fenix 5x plus 8.40...latest maps.

Error code not enough memory.. when trying to navigate to... for instance a poi.....or plot on the map.....even a short distance is not possible.... on the pre installed maps.... or any other map I've installed. The answer is to power cycle my watch when it happens....about every 5 to 9 activities.

Also Motorcycle and Automobile routing has been discontinued on my device....  but works with third party routable maps.

I'll report it by phone to customer support.

  • Just contacted product support by email and phone.. ... Apparently I'm the first to report the issue!.......

Its not going to be escalated until I delete my poi's to rule out the problem.... It would also be very helpful if others reported it.

  • Garmin support at their best as usual. I will give it a try... I never tried navigation on the watch so far...
