Garmin Fenix 5x Plus crashes while calculating route for Navigation on software version 7.6

Hi, all. I’m in the US and wondering if you could help resolve an issue I’ve been having with my Garmin Fenix 5x Plus, and which is frankly tampering all my enthusiasm of an otherwise exciting purchase.

When I go into Navigation, select a location nearby, and press “Go,” the device starts to calculate the route and it says “Calculating” at the bottom. But within seconds, the device crashes and reboots, and sometimes ends up in a loop or reboot. I noticed that this issue happens for me only on the software version 7.6 (which is the latest) and the new maps. On the software version that came with the watch, which was 5.4 (I think), I did not face this issue.

Another complication is that, when I try to change the Routing settings in the settings for Navigation, the device crashes almost always. And if it doesn’t crash, and I’m able to change the routing settings, it crashes after that. I also noticed that when I change the Routing setting from “Walking and Running” to “Direct Routing,” the device does not crash when I press “Go” under Navigation to go to a selected point/destination on the map.

And here’s the worst part. I have done soft reset and hard/factory reset with support from Garmin, deleted user and all data, and got another watch from another store, but the new watch behaves the same and crashes in the above-mentioned scenarios, too, after the software update from 5.4 to 7.6. I updated the software using Garmin Connect on a Windows Laptop. Is there a way to go back to the older software? Even with a hard reset, the software remains the same (7.6).

I’m not sure if it’s the new software, the new maps, GPS or something else that causes the crash but I’d think I’m not the only one. Have you faced this before or know the solution? I’d really appreciate your help resolving this since one of the primary resons for buying this watch if navigation for me.

Thanks,
M
