Automatic software update

Christ am I annoyed!

So, after the upgrade (I  never got prompted for whether I want to or not) from 6.64 to 7.x my HR has been inaccurate for walking/hiking activities.  I tried beta 8.02, which didn't make the problem go away.   Garmin were offering to replace my watch (fēnix 5X Plus) which is just over 4 months old, but that would have meant to be w/o a watch for extended periods of time or to switch to the APAC version which I was trying to avoid for forever.

So, yesterday, with some serious googleing and lots of futzing I managed to unearth the old 6.64 beta, apply it to the watch, set the watch up again w/ all my personalised settings, made sure that auto software update is turned off because I wanted to test the HR feature today; and woke up to the watch telling me that it had upgraded itself to 7.60 overnight ... AAARRRRGH!!  REALLY!?  Why the *** am I given the option to NOT have automatic updates if the bloody thing is going to ignore the setting anyway?!

Pissed off,

Tink

  • Auto update was set to off? settings->system->Software Update->Auto Update (off)

  • Indeed. I did that when it reached 7.60 and have been checking every time before I use Garmin Express on Mac.

  • Maybe a bug with that beta?  If that's the case you could disable phone connect to prevent update: settings->phone->status.  A bit drastic but at least you could do the HR test.

  • That's a possibility.  Well, after having done the song and dance yesterday the downgrade (two-step process) took me just under 20 minutes today; I'll see if the bloody thing does it again Disappointed

  • So, this morning I downgraded my watch to 6.64beta.  Worked fine for my run; worked fine during the cool-down hike home, and HR stayed in the expected range (not like w/ 7.10, 7.60, and 8.02beta.

Got home, am trying to sync, and it's taking HOURS. I have a sneaky suspicion that I'm getting another software update forced on me, and while the mobile app shows my ~ 19K steps for the trail run and walk home, it's not syncing it to the Garmin connect website.

I saw similar slowness the last two days, and as I started "late" in the day (~1600h) the sync hadn't finished by the time I'd gone to bed (by 2150 it had done maybe 60%).  Subsequently both nights my step count was truncated I ended up w/ roughly 10k steps for Th and Fr, when I had done 15k and 13k respectively.

I must say that I'm not amused. Why can't I just keep the bloody software version I'm on and that is *WORKING* for me?

  • The non-sync issue is really starting to annoy me.  I did ~ 22000 steps yesterday, the Connect website acknowledges the first 147 I did before I realised that watch had yet again updated itself despite the "auto update=OFF" and downgraded it yet again.

    Garmin, stop messing with me!!!
