Turn by Turn

I made a route in strava, uploaded the gpx file to my 5xplus, and went out and rode it, worked fine but no turn by turn navigation,  i just see my route on the map, and not always a map just my route, how can I get turn by turn navigation, and if possible with strava segments, I tried to make a route with garmin connect mobile and pc, but it does not work, also tried explore that too does not work for me, I need something free and simple, I already pay for strava, If anybody can help it would be appreciated, about to send my watch back for RMA for other reasons, when I get my new one I hope it will work for what I want..

    Yea did something of the same and it didn't work.

    Drew a map in Strava, starred it.

    Used RouteCourse garmin app - this helps in downloading.

    I then open a bike activity, and use course in the activity.

    It follows the route, starts when I get to the start point, but doesn't warn when I am off the route and also no alarms for turns... 

    Will try the TCX option below. Also, there's a tcx export option on strava. Maybe that worths a try.

    But Edge 820 routes based on a GPX file too as far as I know.

    I have a similar problem. I created a course in Garmin Connect and loaded it to the watch.I deliberately put a waypoint at every junction expecting to get prompts/indications at them.

    I got a few turn prompts - watch beeped but no sound on connected headphones so hard to hear but mostly it ignored the turns - luckily I know the route. It seemed as if it didn't know that were I turned off the main road onto a side road it was a junction.

    Many of the turns didn't even show up as turns at all even when leaving/joining major roads.

    My Fenix 5 Plus has a "Do Course" option (not "Follow Course") which I used to start folow and record my ride.

    The "Map" option just shows a zoomable version of the course but has no options to do anything else.

    What options do you have under 'routing' in the ride activity - I think there's two choice's "use map' or 'follow course' if I recall. does changing it help?

    I have created several routes with in Garmin Connect in the browser. I used the OpenStreetMap as they have way more details (trails,paths etc) then when you use Google Maps. I also select Follow Roads. I just start clicking away to create my routes. When done I save go to my phone select the route and send it to my watch (5+). 
    On my watch I deleted the standard maps and only use these http://www.openfietsmap.nl/. Because when I used to have the original maps and the OpenFietsMap maps the turn-by-turn navigation also was not working. After reading something (can not remember what or where) I decided to delete the standard Garmin maps provided. After I only have the DEM en the OpenFietsMap maps on my watch. And since then had no issue at all with turn-by-turn navigation at around 30-40 meters before the turn I get a single vibration and when I need to take the turn another double vibration.

    The option Routing - Activity=Running&Walking, Courses=Follow Course.
