Partial loss of GPS data?

I did a triathlon race today with my fenix 5 plus, indoor pool swim, came our into T1 - GPS picked up instantly no problem. Out onto the bike, it picked up the first point at which I started the bike leg but nothing afterwards. Back into T2 and run, fine again. So for some reason it would appear to have lost GPS location just as I started the bike leg, yet still tracked my speed etc fairly accurately but without any GPS waypoints, no map and no Strava segments :( Could the data still be in the FIT file created but perhaps just corrupted? Is it retrievable?

without the file, no solution Slight smile

check if you can repair your file with help of FitFileRepairTool

    or

upload the fit file here and check if GPS data is present after T1

    or

with your consent we can have a look at your file with FitFileRepairTool

zip the fit file and upload here in the forum, or provide a link to it on a cloud storage

I had a look at the file using the FFRT, however the trial version suggests that some of the data is removed. Despite that, the position coordinates for the Cycling section don't appear to be present at all (whereas T1 and run are). Interestingly the coordinates for the run appear to be all identical - unless that is the limitation of the trial version? In which case, I presume that it won't be as simple as inputting identical coordinates for the cycle leg.

    congratulations on the triathlon Wink

    as you already noticed...

no gps data logged at all in the fit file during your bike session

T1 and T2 have gps trackings saved in the fit file

starting the bike session GPS reception is recognized and saved in the fit file header

bike session speed and distance data are logged from GPS source

no GPS coordinates are logged during bike session

bike laps are one mile while running laps are one km

GPS logging is setup to be recorded, but it does not record GPS coordinates in the data records

    very strange behaviour

    Definition,0,record,timestamp,1,,position_lat,1,,position_long,1,,distance,1,,altitude,1,,speed,1,,unknown,1,,heart_rate,1,,temperature,1

    Data,0,record,timestamp,"932027199",s,distance,"833.46",m,altitude,"209.62",m,speed,"3.722",m/s,unknown,"300",,heart_rate,"173",bpm,temperature,"24",C,enhanced_altitude,"209.62",m,enhanced_speed,"3.722",m/s

so, nothing there in need for a repair

perhaps time for a reset or a simple long press on the light button until the screen goes dark

    but anyway

    happy & safe sporting

  • I wonder if it has something to do with the recent Galileo outage...the whole constellation was/is offline (suprised if it still is)?

  • It is possible but the additional systems just augment the basic GPS so there should still be something. However, sometimes these things just happen. If it happens again, let us know here and contact Garmin Support.

"bike laps are one mile while running laps are one km" - by design due to my split personality.

I appreciate you taking the time to look into that. At least it's clear now that if it happens again, it's probably just the Garmin having an off day but hopefully there won't be any more issues. Thanks again.
