Fenix 5 Plus - My thoughts

So this is the first time I have purchased a Garmin watch and thought I would share my thoughts:

The Good

1 - Nice logical, easy to use interface

2 - Love the music option

3 - Battery life is great

4 - Strava synch is relatively easy

5 - Love running going phoneless (caveat below)

The bad

1 - Poor GPS tracking. This is a massive let down for me. I wrongly thought that a Garmin device would be more accurate than my phone. I run the same 5.4k (measure with pin drops on mapping site) route 4 times a week and my phone (and the phones of my running buddies) all get circa 5.2k - 5.4k. With my Garmin I have to run past the usual stopping place just to get 5k.

This is even with every second turned on and gallileo. I actually had a run that only tracked 4.4k the other day which is simply not acceptable. I can see that my pace records a drastic drop every time I turn a corner.

I feel that Garmin should make people aware that their devices aren't any more accurate than a phone. There is simply no point having a Garmin if it isn't accurate in my mind.

2 - Build quality. The bezel scratched ridiculously easily. It must be made out of pretty soft ali when it should be made out of something hardend like they use on some ali wheel nuts.

I wouldn't recommend them to anyone else as they are pretty useless without accuracy. And now that I have a scratched bezel it will make it hard for me to sell on.

It's a shame as I really wanted this product to be good (and expected it to be at this price).

I can be up to 800m off when running 5km through downtown Sydney, yet only 100m off when running 20+km on trails where I have a clear view of the sky. It's really location dependant.

Keeping in mind that it'll reduce the distance of that arc by measuring straight lines through each 1 second sample, this dropping your average pace slightly. It'd be nice if it were able to use the accelerometer and compass bearing to plot that arc more accurately, but it's likely a trade-off between accuracy and battery draw to run the calcs continually

Apparently thats what Suunto do with FusedTrack but yeah, its all a compromise...

Ah, the advantages of living in South Wales, where the building density is pretty low :) There's point, i wonder if the original poster is running urban running - that will definitely widen the inaccuracy gap between devices - sounds like it possibly is as they mention a 200-300m deviation between his phone and others -- that sounds like a whole lot of signal bouncing going on

No I haven't. From what I read there is a shortage of GLONASS sats in this hemisphere.

Yep, urban running. Under trees at points too.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Next time I go out I will record both the phone and Garmin results. The route is tree-lined in places and urban.

The reason I am putting faith in the phone data is that it is more consistent and matches more closely to the map I pinned. That and the fact that several other runners that have been out with get a similar distance. I know that doesn't necessarily mean that phones are correct, but they are at least consistent.

I did a few short shuttle runs the other day (went back to chat with stragglers) and the phone completely lost where I was. The line on the map showed me running in a u-shape when it was just a 90 degree bend. Unfortunately I didn't have my phone with me that time. Despite running further due to the shuttle runs, it actually logged c800m short.

    Thanks for the reply :)

Definitely explore GPS+Glonass and GPS+Galileo. See if you can hit a sweet spot

One thought may be trying the beta firmware - and then if you have a blinder of a bad track send it to the beta feedback team - may be a good short cut way to get them to look at it to see if your location has unusual challenges
