Average Pace

I have recently purchased my Garmin Fenix 5s plus, I have noticed when I start a run my pace is all over the place. It can be 12:30 pace then a few seconds later 11:10 then after about 3 mins it settles down to the correct pace, but it always seems a slower pace even when i start fast in a race. I have tried the full mix of satellites and it is still doing it. My last watch was a 735xt and it was much more stable. Anyone else had similar issues. I have also tried a factory reset

  • i am not sure, but i think the 735XT used an 5 or 10 seconds middle of the pace, where as the fenix gives you 1-2 seconds.

for me the best way to keep a stady pace is to use the lap average pace. if vor example i wanna run a 7:00 pace, an the average is 7:10 i have to speed up and vice versa.

  • Thanks for the reply I have tried 1 second intervals and smart recording no difference at all. The 735 also had 1 second recording and was much more stable, this only does the erratic pace for the first 5 minutes of a run then settles down, its not much good in a race when you think your going slow so speed up and then find you are then going too fast

  • I have had the exact same issue from day one. I always thought it was just the fact that I start most of my runs under heavy tree cover after leaving my house. Otherwise it's fine, which is very infrequent. I ended up just getting a Stryd foot pod. Truth be told, my 945 does the same thing and so did my Fenix 3. So maybe my problem is for a different reason then yours. Sorry this want very helpful.

  • i know what you mean. sorry my english is not the best.

FYI:  i don't mean the recording interval. it does not matter when you change it. it is only the amount of data written in the fit file. even when you have smart recording on, the gps ping is for 1 second.

what i meant was the data field "current pace" i "think" it was programmed, to show an average of 5 or 10 seconds on the 735, so the shown value was smoother. and i think the shown value of the fenix is more an 1 or 2 seconds calculation. so it's more unstable.

most accurate pace you'll get from a pod. and i feel that using the hrm-tri gives me also a more stable pace. (but that could also only be my imagination) :-)

  • another point "could be", that if the watch found's 3 satellites (orange ring) it get's your position, 4 for the elevation (green ring around the display). so when you run a while, it find's other satellites and get more accurate data.

  • Thanks for the reply. I find calibrating my foot pod difficult but not tried it yet with the fenix 5. I might try it again
