Creation of pay per use FIRSTBEAT metrics on F5X PLUS?

Hello,

I know that the jury is out if Garmi will include new firstbeat metrics on the premium f5x plus series. But if money is the issue and people really want it without changing a brand new device 9 less than 1 year old), why doesn't firstbeat put the new compatible features ( depending on hardware) on garmin IQ store and charge 10$ a feature or a bundle pack. Garmin can take a cut and everyone can't complain.

Or just have a programmer (I know if I had the knowledge and knowhow) make a similar function and sell it. The first beat features are based on studies that are available for all.

Would Garmin allow this ?

Thanks for your feedback

  • In the case of GP and Music, HW is involved.  NFC for GP and lots more memory for Music.

  • I think there's a point where they'll start to shift less units if they push the cost too high.  If the Fenix 6 is really that costly I think I would "downgrade" my experience to the 945/955.  All these market pricing  things need balance I guess.

I do like the Garmin ecosystem so it would be a shame if they continue to increase costs in this way.  I've considered moving to Suunto a few times but never done it...only way I would go would eventually be cost driven.

I'm fully aware that this is hardware in my 945.  My reply was I would like to see something like this not only for the Firstbeat metrics, but other features also. My example was I purchase the watch at a set price, but I have an option to activate additional features the watch is capable of at a later time for an additional fee if I choose. The 645 and 645M have a $100 difference. Let's just stick with that $100 figure for discussion purposes. Garmin is going to make a profit, so let's say the music hardware cost them $75 per watch.  Sell me that 945 $25 cheaper than I currently paid.  If I want the music I can activate it for $25.  Garmin still gets their $100 for using the music feature, or I can save $25 for not activating something I won't use and the hardware cost for Garmin is covered.

  • We should ask firstbeat if its possible?

Maybe its not a good business model for them.

Maybe some programmers can make an app. I know the HRV app is pretty good ( its not Firstbeat) , maybe the programmer could make a body ressource widget ? I would buy it.

I too would pay a subscription to unlock features on older model hardware. Garmin could price this so the development/licensing was covered and add a small addition to account for fewer new watch sales. It's also quite environmentally ethical as well.

Each widget and app bundled with the "firmware" is a Connect IQ app. The very same that you and I could write and distribute within the store. The infra already exists.

  • Nope..  None of the native widgets or apps are Connect IQ, though Gamin does built some additional things like the Runpower DF that are.  For MARQ, things like the "Driver" app for the MARQ driver is CIQ based.

CIQ doesn't have access at the level needed to do something like this.  There's a number of things in the existing widgets that also can't be done with CIQ, with the "last run" widget being just a simple example.
