Fēnix 5x Plus Training status

So ... I was sick for almost two weeks, 11 days without running, and Tuesday last week my watch told me I had no training status and I needed to run outside twice.

Thursday I ran 10km of trail (predominantly - there were ~ 1.5km road wedged in there), Saturday I ran the same route, still being told I needed to run outside twice.

Today I ran 7 km on road, and it's still telling me I need to run outside twice ... does it have a "counting impediment" of sorts? Did the upgrade to 7.10.0.0 (which I didn't get prompted for, btw) break my watch, is it safe to go back to the very stable beta  6.55 (I still have the files)?

  • You need to use the "run" activity. The "trail run" activity won't have an effect on training status like the run activity. Trail run app doesn't affect VO2 Max which I believe is why you won't get a training status. Also I've had this happen and it took 3 runs with a chest strap HRM to register a new status.   If this doesn't work then I'm out of ideas.

  • Thanks for the response

    Oh - wow, I didn't realise that.

So, what happens in the future? I mean, since I've had the fēnix pretty much 95% of my running was "trail runs", but it seemed quite happy with those to maintain my training status? If I do one road-run a fortnight that's a lot ... (asphalt is no good for my old arthritic knees =})

  • Copy jsou run App and rename it as a Trail Run.

  • Once you've got the training status registered all you need to do is a "run" 2 or 3 times a month and it should maintain the status I think. I've only had it loose status 2 or 3 times in the last few years and it happened after only doing "trail run" for over 2 weeks straight. So even if you only run on trail it's not a bad idea to use the run activity every once in a while  if you want to maintain a training status.

  • I had also noticed that trail run doesnt register VO2max and training status (although trail activities give training effect values... I'm getting a bit confused here). I know that Firstbeat algorithms take climb in consideration while calculating VO2Max and training status, so I usually register my workouts as "run", except I plan on high ascents and I know I'm going to have to do a lot a walking during climbs. Pretty happy with the training status reporting I'm getting from the watch that way. Just in case it may help Slight smile

My training status has disappeared too- after a 10 mile road run. No idea why it disappeared will try the advise of two runs as ive just done trail runs fir the last three days, it also paused mid run tonight and although the distance is just 0.3 miles short (which is how long it paused) the gps tracking is wild and bears no resemblance to recorded distance.

a little annoyed to be honest

  • Which then begs the question why they make the differentiation in the first place ... I'm fairly puzzled, as far as I'm concerned I get *massive* VoMAX benefits from running up steep hills =} ... what other differences do I need to be aware off between "trail run" and "run" activities?

Should I start recording my trail runs as runs? Is 's suggestion to copy & rename run to trail run sound?

  • That sucks - sorry to hear, and keep us in the loop.
