"Around me" and POI doesn't work.

"Around me" and POI doesn't work anymore, further more, I can't then load any maps unless I do a soft reset.
It was working prior to software update 7.10 ASAIK.

I have selected, deselected, reselected the Garmin maps, but to no avail. (2018.20)

Anyone else having the same problem?

  • I had the same issues after F5+ upgrade to 2018.20 TopoActive Europe maps and maybe more importantly after the firmware upgrade to 7.10.

I already replied to a thread that may not be as relevat to this issue forums.garmin.com/.../not-displaying-topo-1-50-uk-map but I basically tried reinstalling the maps, rebooting, leaving it loading etc. and finally just left the watch connected via USB to Garmin Base Gamp for it to index the maps fully for a day and gave the watch couple of reboots.

The maps and routing still seem slower than prior to 7.10 and maps don't show the Topo Active content with same zoom-levels as it used to but at least I can now navigate to POIs and can view the maps, at least in the closest zoom ranges while doing an activity. So it somehow works kind of.

Still when I go to view a past activity (which I have even navigated succesfully with the same fw version), and view the map on the watch it gives me just a blank white screen for minutes and doesn't even show the route on it. If I zoom in and wait for couple of minutes, it will eventually show the map.

However, the last zoom level I will ever see Topo Active content with this fw is one that has 300m reading in the zoom bar. After that (500m) it will just be the useless base map with two main roads. It used to be possible to view past activities fully on a topo active maps far as I remember. And they do still take more time load in general.

I really hope Garmin is working on fixing the issue.

  • TommiR. Thanks for the reply.I have only just been able to see your response as the forums were down !

My issues seem to be similar, in some respect, to yours.

I had taken all the steps as you:-

    Reinstalling maps

    Letting Basecamp index them

    Rebooting, many many times

Most of the time I would get a loading map screen (using Around Me) and after about 10min I would give up and switch the watch off.

Switch it back on again and then I could access maps again, from navigation or Maps.

As soon as I tried to use around me I would have the same problem again. Its the same with POI.

I did eventually use the poi once and it worked, but then it went back to the continuous loading maps again, when I came out of it.

I have also allowed the watch to load the maps in its own time frame (took about 30mins) but as soon as I used the Around me again, it would go again into the continuous loading maps again. Leaving this for a long time did not solve the problem.

On a very few occasions I have also got as far as the map displaying the cone (using Around me) but then it would say "No Map Points" and it would go back into the loading maps loop again. I have also experienced the blank screen you describe.

Switching the watch off/on again, I could access the maps again.

I have also experienced the watch switching itself off.

I have tried many configurations. IE trying Auto zoom on off etc, tried many manual zoom levels, still no joy.

Been trying everything I can think of for the past 4 days, its starting to drive me nuts. I wanted this feature for an upcoming trip.

Also of note is that when connected to Basecamp, the POI are definitely there, just can't seem to access them from the watch.

I'm convinced its a firmware problem, and wish I had copied the entire Garmin file and was able to revert to the previous firmware.

    • Same issue with my new FR945. Selecting "around me" just results in the never-ending loading maps screen.  I've tried everything short of a factory reset to default which I'll try as a last resort.  If you find a solution, please post it.
  • I have also noticed that the directions on an activity no longer work on a course that it previously did.

I reloaded the maps using GE. I removed the Topo maps, (D6185050A.img and gmapprom.img and replaced them again.

I eventually loaded the 7.52 beta for the Fenix 5 X Plus. That didn't solve it. So I've put 7.10 back, still the same.

There are new Topo Euro maps available (2019.10) but

1/ I don't have enough data left this month

2/ I don't have enough free memory left on the watch.

So I give up and it looks like I won't be able to use these functions on my upcoming trip.

I have only had the watch 2 months now and had so many issues, that I have lost faith in the Garmin brand.

  • Answer from in https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-5-plus-series/161238/not-displaying-topo-1-50-uk-map was really helpful.

I just tried installing the 2019.10 maps and it seemed to help with the slow loading of maps. (Still doesn't show Topo Active on outer zoom levels but loads much faster)

After that I also installed the firmware upgrade to 7.52 but noticed no difference with that so maybe the problem was with the maps rather than with the firmware to begin with.

  • I'll give it a go on 22nd when my Broadband data allowance resets.

Is it safe to delete the current .img files, before updating via GE? If it is, I will be able to have enough room

The 2019.10 file is 7GB When you update, does it add to current size of the maps or does it over write some of it?

  • It replaces the maps you have.

  • Has this been fixed? POI is working for me but not "around me". Only get a loading maps screen forever.

  • It didn't work up til a few days ago, when I updated my maps to TopoActive 2019.20 and Software Version 9.10

I updated the SW as part of the map update using GE

Shame it wasn't fixed earlier in my case as I really wanted to use it on a recent 2 month trip around 11 countries.

Out of interest, What SW and Map version are you using?

It works but is a bit slow. It takes about 30-40 seconds to load and when I first tried it, it worked with 'Navigation' and also 'Walk', but not 'Map'

  • watch is on 4.30 and maps are current, 2019.20..
