Watch still rebooting on it's own, now it's intermittently loosing HR data

I have had my watch reboot on it's own during activities, sometimes on a beta (I talked with the beta team, they have information on previous situation. Talk to person named Courtney, Fenix 5 beta team). It happened again today, at approximately the .99 mile marker of my activity, walking. Upon the reboot, I have saved the err_log.bak, and the Ram.Txt file, which I zipped up and sent to the beta team, but will provide here if wished, or would help. Upon further investigation, I discovered that once again, the HR monitor has stopped working on it's own also, not when I have an external HR monitor attached, and I have just noticed this. It has happened before, but I chalked it up to something I've done. I'd really like to have a device that is reliable, and as it is right now, I'm afraid the Apple Watch is more reliable than my Fenix 5+ (Sapphire). If there are any other tests that anyone can think of, please let me know. I have done the restart, hard reset (Hold down light for 12+ seconds until unit turns off, then restart), re-installed the firmware, etc.
Has anyone else seen these problems, or do I just have a POS device?
  • I have had my watch for over a year, been on multiple Betas, and never had a reset during an activity. Not once. I do between 7-14 hours of run/bike/swim every week and have never had a reset.
  • I would suggest you are unlucky. Work with Garmin and they will resolve. My 5+ is working fine.

As a start point, I'd remove any added apps or data fields and revert back to an 'out of the box' state, ideally do a factory reset to move any data and revert back to 'as new'. It does take a little time to reconfigure, but it's worthwhile doing that rather than reinstalling saved settings. That way you can begin to isolate causes. Besides, it's a great way to get reacquainted with the menu items :-)

I have been trying to avoid that, as it is such a job to get everything right, (I've owned several Garmins, Suunto's, Polars, Apple Watches, etc) and virtually every time I have left things out that takes about 3 or 4 months to get everything the way it was. I have contacted Garmin, and yeah, they'll probably make me do that, but would that cause the optical all day heart rate to stop working for several hours? Anyway, I'm going to wait to be forced to do the complete "as new" reset, and if it stops the problem, I'll be glad. I really DO love the watch, and I SO want it to work right.

I just thought of something, both of the last two times this has happened (The Reboot, not the HRM stopping), I have been using an activity that I created specifically for walking in the Mall. I may start using another "indoor walk", or something and perhaps, if I'm lucky, the app I created may be the culprit. Hmmmmm :-)
  • Instead of full reset your device, you can try to make "default" settings on selected acivity. Open activity, observe Options message, press UP. Then find this acitivty settings menu. Scroll down to reset to defaults menu item.

I have eliminated the "Mall Walk" activity, and am going to use the simple "Walk" one, with the GPS turned off. We'll see, it may take some time, as it's completely random.. Thanks for the info, I did not realize I could "default" individual activities..
