Fenix 5+ Reboot during activity

I searched, and found this occurring in the 5S, and the "answer" was 'Random Glitch". To me, this is unacceptable.
Had this happen today, felt the wrist haptic, noticed a blank screen. Hit the Light button, and the system rebooted. Waited until the activity screen came on, and opted for "Continue" the activity. Off we go again. At the end, the activity appeared to be correct, however, upon uploading to GC, the thing only counted the 2nd part of the activity for the Training Effect, Although the Heart Rate zones appear to be correct.
This, of course ruins my recovery time, and overall stats. Other than the rather lame (IMHO) excuse that it must be made by Microsoft, and needs rebooting upon whim, is there a technical reason for this?
Oh, and by the way, the Apple Watch Series 4 has never done this, and as I was comparing heart rates, distances, and overall exertion between the two, this really messed up my comparison.
Any ideas?
  • The F5+ I'm using at the moment rebooted three times now, on FW 10.00, and perhaps (not sure) also on 9.10, during runs (workouts). There were a few ANT+ sensors connected, the same set of sensors as I always used with my FR935 (no problems with them). The watch is default except for the Garmins sun/moon and hunt/fish widgets that are installed. I only tried hard (master) reset, no effect, and have no other ideas.

But if someone recognizes this and was helped by reverting to FW 9.10, that would be really helpful to know.

Just wondering, would it be useful to send a saved memory dump from _after_ the reboot to Garmin? The watch would have re-initialized itself after that reboot, so I guess it will probably not be very informative.

  • I use my Fenix 5 plus since Firmware 7.60 and I only had one freeze during an activity with 8.40, when I stopped the watch (I lost 2km). No further issues since then, although I use it almost daily for running, cycling, multisports (Treadmill+Strength Training + Treadmill) with and without music!

I would recomment to remove all 3rd party apps and restart the watch. If the crashes still occur, there must be something wrong with the watch thich is then a case for the Garmin Service!

  • Even without the Garmin widgets and another hard reset it still crashed during workouts. No warranty on this watch, so no  Garmin service for it. And other than this crash-during-workout-thing, everything is 100% OK with the F5+, so I had a hard time believing it would be a hardware issue.

In the end I figured I would simply use my original Fenix for the workout timing and record with the F5+, but the Fenix hung during startup on "loading workouts" after I had send my workouts to it. So I thought that the issue wasn't the watch, but the workouts.

And after reviewing the 3 reboot incidents, they were all during one particular workout. I guess that that workout is simply corrupted. The Fenix boots fine if it is deleted. I haven't tested a freshly recreated version of that particular workout on the F5+ yet though, but I think that the workout itself was the problem.
