Pace in activities converted into courses

If I got it right, I understand that racing a past activity will not use the average pace for that activity but the actual registered pace for different sections of the course. This would be very useful to try to improve my times in certain trial run races, where pace changes wildly depending on the section, i.e. trying to stay ahead of my virtual partner.

However, if I try this approach for races that take place once a year, it is extremely time consuming to use the "race an activity" option, since I would have to browse through a year of activities just to find the right one from 12 months ago.

So I thought I would convert the past activity into a course in Garmin Connect and then send it as a course to the watch.

Now my question: when racing that course, will the virtual partner use the original dynamic pace or will it use a constant average pace (calculated on the basis of time and distance)?
