f?nix 5/5S/5X Plus ex-proof?

Hi. Does anybody know if f?nix 5/5S/5X Plus is ex-safe? If I use it offshore on oil-platform it has to be ex-proof. Cant find any info in manual.
  • If it doesn’t say that it is intrinsically safe, then assume it’s not.

This is a great question. I know of no wrist watches that are specified as intrinsically safe by the manufacturers, but I have seen many folks wearing watches on oil rigs. What wrist watches have you observed being worn on rigs? Were they documented as intrinsically safe, or was there a general guideline on the rig that certain kinds of watches were OK?

    Thanks for the info.

Every mechanical, or electronic watches (ordinary quartz) that uses maximum 1.5V powersource are ok. So in general, all smart/activity watches are not ok. Thats why I was hoping that F5X was Ex-certified. It is built like a tank and waterproof to 100m so i can't see any big hazard potential wearing it. But according to our guidelines, it makes no difference if it is a F5, Apple watch or some Fitbit or Samsung plastic. All are in same category and not allowed.

Sounds like you have answered your own question.

Don't think so. My question was if F5 was ex-proof. I still don't know that, but I assume it is not since I can't find any info about it. IF it was ex-proof, then it would have been ok to wear on my rig. Even if it is a "smartwatch"
  • I am pretty certain that a device is not considered ex-proof unless the manufacturer has done the necessary testing and documentation work to prove that it is ex-proof according to some recognized standard.

If Garmin has done that work, I have no doubt that they will write it in the datasheet for the watch. Why else bother doing the work?

So if you can't find it in Garmin's description of the watch, you can be rather sure that they haven't done the work, and then the watch can't be considered ex-proof.

(Please note that I base the above on pure logic and a general knowledge of how industri safety standards work. My personal experience with ex-proof devices is very outdated - more than 20 years old. At that time I worked offshore and had to use an old, completely manual SLR camera to get around the ex-proof requirements. And the smartwatch wasn't invented yet...)

I have to agree with you. The reason for asking was that the technical specification in the manual doesn't say too much regarding details, so I was hoping someone had some "hidden" info to share. Guess I have to dig out my old Citizen Eco-pro diver then. Solar powered masterpiece.. :-)
