Hello,
I purchased the fenix 5X plus the other week, when i connected the first time to the garmin android application it updated to 6.00, the I used the garmin express to update maps but is not updating to the latest versions that I see here https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=14335#Instruct I am in UK and purchased through the garmin website.
Is this expected behaviour or am I missing something?
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestion you can provide.
  • The link provided is for the beta firmware which requires manual installation. Installing betas is not achieved through Garmin Connect or their desktop counterparts. Follow the installation instructions at the link. In a nutshell, you will need to (1) unzip the files and (2) copy the new watch firmware to the \GARMIN directory on the watch and (3) copy all other sensor firmware files (wifi, ant, 5x+ sensor hub ...) to the \GARMIN\REMOTESW directory on the watch. Unplug and accept install.

If on Windows - the watch when connected shows as a mounted device/disk
If on Mac - you will need to install and use Android File Transfer (https://www.android.com/filetransfer/) for the device to mount as a device/disk

Thanks for the reply rweckhoff now I understand, do you know if installing the beta will still allow automatic ota upgrade when stable versions are out?
  • Yes. Provided that the production / stable version is a higher numbered version over the beta.
  • Another note here, is how to ID a beta version by it's number.. Generally, if the last digit is zero, it's production/ota (X.X0) while if it's non-zero, it's beta (X.X1)
  • Should I install the beta on my Fenix 5X plus? Long time since update now...
  • I do and haven’t had any issues. Ultimately, your call. If everything is fine for you on 6.00 and don’t want to deal with manually updating when new beats arrive then stay on stable.

If you have problems with 5 or 6 digit power spikes with a power meter, you should definitely update. This was solved in 6.51.

If you have problems with random reboots in activities, I would also update. I am not sure of which exact version had this problem. It was definitely gone for me in 6.51, but it could already have been gone in 6.00.
