Fenix5+ or Edge 1030

Hi,

Actually I have got a Vivoactive 3, cadence sensor, premium chest strap and radar 511. Unfortunately on my va3, the battery is done after a gps+galileo cycling tour of 5-6 hours and the altimeter is quite bad.

I am thinking about buying a Fenix 5+ instead of my VA3 or Edge 1030 in addition to my VA3 (I also do hiking, running, swimming etc.). I prefer the fenix, because as far as I saw from datasheet, there is no feature that the Edge has got what the Fenix hasnt (except accident notification and smaller display).

So now my question to you: Is there any disadvantage of fenix compared with edge 1030 (except those 2 I wrote)? Is the altimeter/gps senor of edge maybe better?

Thanks!
  • Thank you for your answers.

I prefer a fenix 5+ over a forerunner 935 because of the gimmicks (navigation, wallet, music storage, wifi) and for optical reasons. Ok, the fenix 5+ won't last 24 hours, but when Garmin's official meaning is up to 18 hours, what can I expect? 15 hours with gps/galileo, radar, chest strap, navigation and cadence sensor?

The only point I'm not sure about is to choose Edge 1030 or Fenix 5+, when looking at altimeter/gps accuracy and battery life.
  • If you're talking about GPS accuracy for road cycling then at those kind of speeds it becomes irrelevant. Inaccuracies only really come into play at slower speeds and with tight corners (such as walking/running and mountain biking). Maybe if you're cycling through a concrete canyon of high buildings, but I think you'd have the same issues with either device there.
  • It lacks a wallet/NFC

So does the Fenix 5. The Fenix 5+ has all of those things but has terrible battery life.

My point was if he is on a budget he can get all of the same functionality with that watch/edge combo. If he is trying to decide between an Edge 1030 or a Fenix 5+ then he isn't really concerned with the "Gimmicks" since he won't have any of those if he gets an Edge instead of a Fenix 5+. I'm still not sure what his actual requirements are here, if the OP has an unlimited budget then he should just get both the 1030 and the F5+... if he is on a budget and wants all the functions, Get the F5+. If he is on a budget and has to have the bigger display but can do without the wallet/mapping/music on the watch then he can get a FR935/Edge 520+ combo that would give him excellent battery life, excellent value, and most features he wanted. The Edge has the mapping but he would be out the NFC and Music. The FR935 and Edge both have WIFI.
  • Battery life is fine for me. Use around 5-6% per hour GPS + Galileo so I would imagine I could hit the 18 hours fine.

Currently at 40% after 5 days and 4 hours of GPS activities.
  • Ok I see, thank you. Did you have differences in kilometers and height meters after the tour (in the activity) in case you used fenix5+ and edge 520plus at the same time? And... what, the fenix 5+ only lasts 5 hours when using gps and these sensors? Because I also use gps+galileo, radar, cadence, chest hrm and I thought it would last about 15 hours?

Never used both devices at the same time.

It was back in july, but I’m pretty sure the watch was around the 10% mark after 5 hrs riding.
In addition to the sensors you use also used the varia vision. 1sec recording, navigating a course with turn by turn instructions. Map displayed 95% of the time.

I think the Navigation and watch frequenrly re-redering the map may have something to do with my experience with battery life. :)
I think showing only simple datafields and not using navigation drastically increases battery life.
  • So if I understand right, navigation needs a lot of battery life? What if I don't look at the map, but only look on data fields while in the background navigation is on and only get a pop-up when I have to turn left/right? Is that possible with fenix 5+ and does this also dramatically reduce battery life?

How about driving after saved routes? Does this also need that much battery like navigation?

Hi, the Fenix 5 does NOT have a NFC chip and therefor no wallet.
You can check the specs here: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/03/garmin-fenix5-5s-5x-review.html
    or on the Garmin site.

I think if you re-read his post he was actually agreeing with you - that the Fenix 5 also lacks NFC
  • I have the Edge 1030 and the 5S+. I use the 1030 for all bike ride and the 5S+ for everything else. The main reason is screen size. I can read the 1030 screen without my glasses and I cannot do that with the 5S+ (that's also why I don't have the 520 or one of the smaller bike computers). When I bike I sweat so much that I can't wear glasses much of the time so the 1030 screen size is a big benefit. Also, for navigation having big, easier to read, easier to scroll/pan maps is a huge benefit. Screen size is usually a big benefit. Finally, the 1030 has much better battery life than the 5S+. I got the 5S+ because it is best sized for my wrists and I wear it pretty much 24/7. But, the screen is very small compared to the 1030.
