Map Performance and free storage space

I was just wondering if knows if the amount of free storage space on the Fenix 5+ affects the speed of the maps.

The map performance whilst zooming is not amazingly quick on my watch and can take tens of seconds to zoom (depending on the level).

I do have nearly 4GB of music and a 3GB additional map installed.

This weekend the watch upgraded to 2018.20 Maps and I happened to notice I have around 1.4GB free space, the performance after updating the maps is no different but I was wondering what performance other people are getting and whever freeing up space will make things quicker.
  • I had the same problem. the mail from garmin support helped:

I'm going to need you to access the Garmin folder of your Fenix using your computer's File Explorer or Finder, and look for all .img files over 100MB, these need to be deleted (Except gmapbmap.img and gmaptz.img!!!)

After deleting the .img files as instructed, I'll need you to then try and reinstall them via Garmin Express, you may need to first disconnect the Fenix from the computer then reconnect it if Garmin Express suddenly stops recognising it.

This should prompt you to install the newest available mapping on your device, this may take several hours to complete.
  • De. Vern, did it make a difference. If so how fast is it now?

  • I deleted my additional map and performance is vastly improved (no deleting or re-installing required).

However I would like to have the addtional map back and still have two large map files on the device 'gmapprom.img & D6*****A.img' I am guessing these relate to the TopoActive North East and Topo Active South West.

Can anyone tell me how these relate as ideally I'd like to remove TopoActive North East and keep TopoActive South West but free up room for my own map.
