Is Garmin Express needed for the latest Wi-Fi capable devices?

I am having issues with Garmin Express saying I cannot sync my data because my device is not the active tracker, although it is indeed set to be the active tracker, and no other devices exist in my Garmin Connect website, or here: https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myUnits.htm

So I was wondering... do I really need Garmin Express, or can my Fenix 5S Plus download firmware updates and map updates without Garmin Express?

You can receive public release software updates and GPS version updates through WI-FI or certain websites .. etc...
But not map updates.
I'd phone product support... they should have you up and running with express in no time.

I called the support and they were unable to help. Seems like this is a problem for some people with macOS...

I’m a Mac user and generally find no issues using GE. As noted you need it for some updates but not for others. Since I charge mine from the computer I update generally from GE. Updates OTA or BT can be lengthy. Always quicker via GE

I have the same issue, seems to be a garmin express bug on macos.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, just disconnect and try again
